Jan, I'm going to Austin in mid-July for 8 days, and I may actually

move there next year. I would really appreciate any info you could

provide on the GF cafes there that you mention!! I have heard about

the " Wild Wood Art Cafe and Bakery " from

http://glutenfree-travel.blogspot.com/2008 . Any other favorites

would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Janette,

The offerings right here in the area are a little disappointing,

but you can check out Spica on Castro Street in Mountain View. (It's

the town one over from Sunnyvale). They have (or at least had) some

gluten-free offerings, but one of the main suppliers went out of

business. I think they still have some baked goods, and maybe

sandwiches. Also, a Japanese cake shop called Satura has a gluten-free

" Yuna " cake. I can't speak to all of the CC issues, but the cake

slices are wrapped in individual plastic after it is made so at least

is unlikely to come into physical contact with others. I have had it

several times successfully, but YMMV. This cake shop is in Los Altos

(close) or Palo Alto (farther). There may be a shortage of cute,

gluten-free coffee shops but we have lots of coffee shops, especially

on Castro Street in Mountain View. There is also one nice coffee shop

in downtown Sunnyvale that has ice cream and blended drinks. (I

haven't checked there, just have espresso.) You can also go to local

Whole Foods like in Los Altos and get snacks and coffee there

(including GF Bakehouse Pie) and enjoy it there. Not perfect, but it's

pleasant.

The best places are in Oakland (Mariposa), Windsor (Mangiamos

Italian Restaurant), SF (Zadin vietnamese), and (Farmer's

Kitchen Cafe). Windsor and are especially far, but maybe ok for

a long weekend expedition.

Here are write ups I did about gluten-free life in the Bay Area.

http://www.bookofyum.com/blog/category/bay-area/

Some entries are not centered on restaurants, but if you keep clicking

" previous " you'll get there.

Here's if you want to skip to :

Or skip to Oakland:

Or skip to Windsor:

Hope this helps!

When I was diagnosed a couple of months ago, I couldn't believe how many of my friends reacted only with, "Wow, you are going to get so skinny!" (They clearly confuse gf with those carb free diets... And I'm not someone who needs to lose weight anyway, so I guess they were projecting their own fantasies onto me!) But if they only knew you could get gf brownies and cheesecake and all sorts of high calorie treats! I'm glad I can eat just as unhealthily gf as I sometimes did with gluten! ;-)

Seriously, I do love hearing about gf cheesecake, in particular! Thanks!

Call Mangiamo a few days before you go. They always have the pasta

and GF bread, but if you call ahead they may be able to make you a

pizza as they make the dough on Monday when the kitchen is pristine

:). Don't leave without trying the chocolate GF dessert it is pretty

yummy.

Also, has anyone heard of a GF restaurant in Downtown Santa ? I

heard there was one opening up that had a dedicated GF kitchen as the

owner's are a CD family, but haven't been able to locate it.

This is probably a good idea. On the other hand, when I went I didn't

call ahead and they had the pizza available and listed on their gluten

free menu. My visit was on the weekend, too. But, maybe things have

changed, and it's always good to give them a heads up. Love the " real "

pizza box for leftovers!

You are absolutely welcome, Trudy. I had found out about the place on

this board ages ago from an offhand comment someone made. I do know

about the preferred customer thing- we've had trouble making it for

those special occasions, but it's great.
