Guest guest
Tristan, First, Do not let the ignorant attitude of your in laws affect you. You will find that you will always have this problem with them if they are anything like my mother-in -law. You did nothing wrong by informing the staff that you could not eat what they prepared. I did the same at my brother-in-laws wedding last February. And just like you experienced the staff was wonderful and very willing to accommodate me and they did not charge any extra for this. So your m-i-l had no reason to get all flared up. You are very lucky to have a husband who is so understanding and so willing to support you. Second, You are not selfish. I had people tell me I was and I let them have it with both barrels. You really have to be willing to stand up for yourself or you will be miserable the rest of your life. I have learned to exaggerate when it comes to people who are so ignorant by telling them that it could kill me if I ate the stuff. That opens there eyes some. I have also found that it is much simpler to say that you have a severe allergy rather then an auto immune disorder. People seem to understand that one.
