Tristan,

First, Do not let the ignorant attitude of your in laws affect you. You

will find that you will always have this problem with them if they are

anything like my mother-in -law. You did nothing wrong by informing the

staff that you could not eat what they prepared. I did the same at my

brother-in-laws wedding last February. And just like you experienced the

staff was wonderful and very willing to accommodate me and they did not

charge any extra for this. So your m-i-l had no reason to get all flared

up. You are very lucky to have a husband who is so understanding and so

willing to support you.

Second, You are not selfish. I had people tell me I was and I let them

have it with both barrels. You really have to be willing to stand up for

yourself or you will be miserable the rest of your life. I have learned

to exaggerate when it comes to people who are so ignorant by telling

them that it could kill me if I ate the stuff. That opens there eyes

some. I have also found that it is much simpler to say that you have a

severe allergy rather then an auto immune disorder. People seem to

understand that one.
