Guest guest
Sounds like you need an advocate. First they MUST show data on his progress with goals- They must have documentation that he met the goal and a mere teacher's opinion does not cut it. Has he had an OT eval? Have you given him and indep one? If he needs an aide the need should be shown in his present level narration. Try going to wrightslaw.com for some goo information. Also try COPPA website for an advocate. Good Luck! From: casey_heying <casey_heying@...> Subject: [ ] Help with School Services Date: Thursday, December 4, 2008, 3:28 PM Hi Everyone! I am new to this group. Loving all the topics that are discussed. It helps out tremendously. My son Jordan has apraxia. He is 3 years old. He is in ECSE at our local school. We recently had an IEP and it was horrible. They took away a lot of services he needs. How can they define completed a goal when certainly he has not. My child is not potty trained (especially BM) and they say he has completed his goal. One of his other goals is fine motor skills. (they wont give hims OT though) They say he can hold a tripod grasp, which i have never seen it or anyone else that works with him outside the school has seen it. He has sensnory problems(i got him privatly tested) and they say he doesnt have problems. They say they dont see that in the classroom. They also say they can NOT put 1 on 1 on 1 in the IEP. There is not room for it in the IEP . They have totaly decreased his minutes and i jjust dont know what to do. he use to go to school 3 hours a day 5 times a week. now he only goes 1 30 minutes a day 4 days a week. I feel that we need to increase goals or do something. they say if they did he would be at a 6 year old level which is untrue. He is not nearly close to what the other kids his age is. Can you guys please help of give me advice. ' Just another note, if anyone lives in the St.louis area let me know also if there are any support groups etc. Thank you Casey ------------------------------------
Guest guest
What I have done in the past is gotten written statements or " reports " from our docs and outside therapist about things they say he needs. This way it is not just me saying these things. I have professionals giving input as well - although you are his parent and you know what he needs! I made a list of items I wanted addressed. Has it been 10 days since your IEP? If not, you can still reject the IEP you may have just signed. You can write a letter saying you want to have another meeting (even if it has been 10 days you can always do this.) Then get yourself prepped. I can give you some information from my coach who is about an hour to hour and a half away from you. She does 2 hours of free consultation, and she can do it over the phone if you are interested. I live 2 hours from St. Louis, so I am close but not minutes away. I would be more than happy to talk with you. The advice I got from this board and our coach has been life saving. I just posted a blog 2 weeks ago on our site about our latest IEP experience. I gave links to some forms that may be helpful. Since every child is different there may be other things that are more appropriate. You can e-mail me if you would like to talk. ~ Ethan's Mom Helping Parents of Children with Apraxia~ www.ethanslifewithapraxia.com csljh2000@... ________________________________ From: casey_heying <casey_heying@...> Sent: Thursday, December 4, 2008 2:28:51 PM Subject: [ ] Help with School Services Hi Everyone! Guest guest
He has had a sensory eval done by an OT. The school OT came and evaled him a year ago and they said that he had borderline problems. I think they need to test him again to see if he qualifies for services. but they told me no. They are showing data but i am not seeing that stuff at home at all and we work very hard with him. and his private speech therapist helps with him on all kinds of stuff and his daycare does too and they do not see it either. I do have an advocate coming, but i was told they can not talk in the meeting. is that true? - -- In , " L. T. Guest guest
You radvocate needs to observe him in class before going to the meeting so he/she can assess the needs. You can request a reevaluation plan and request your own indep one as well. But if he is having difficulty on campus that related to OT (holding crayon, scissors, eating ,sensory -then he requires services. Absolutely not- An advocate can speak - If they do not want to speak all they need is your consent. That is ridiculous. Often I find that the members of the team don't know what they are doing and don't have correct information. Try wrightslaw and see what you find.
