Guest guest
Hi Everyone, My high functioning six year old just completed AIT (Berard) eight days ago. When I did my research and talked to the therapists who supervised the intensive ten day program, I was told to expect regression around day five or six. Well, not only did my son not experience regression during the program he actually made gains in speech (more advanced language and sentence structure) and even made first time comments like " I want to be a fireman when I grow up " . Needless to say, I was very excited. Around five days the program was completed, he has regressed a lot (for him). Things that I am noticing are spinning, bouncing, can't get his attention, less social, loss of appetite and regressed back to eating crunchy foods, screams that I scared him if I call his name from a different room from the one I am in. He is also very emotional and gets frustrated much quicker than when we started. My Speech therapist assured me that this is normal and that some kids regress after the program is finished. Needless to say, I am very concerned and would love to find other parents who have done AIT with similar experiences. One thing I need to share is that my son was taking a course of gentamycin (for his gut) and entocort and pentasa during the AIT. When I checked out the Berard websites it mentioned that under no circumstances should participants be on any ototoxic drugs including gentamycin and steroids. I was assured that the form of gentamycin my son was taking was not systematic and that it stayed in the gut to fight psuedamonas. Well, I am freaked out even more and now I need reassurance ... please Please feel free to email me off group. TIA, Dayna
