Guest guest
Dear Becky and Tom, We were on the same regime for a couple weeks and then we were able to discontinue the 12 am and 3 am blood sugars. Josh is on Lantus 12 units every 9 am and 1 unit for every 25 grams of carbohydrates he eats. Has your endocrinologist mentioned Trial Net? What state do you live in? The reason I asked is because we live in Iowa and there is a program called Trialnet. This program is doing a lot of research and they tested our daughter to see if she had a gene that they are studying. This gene predisposes us to juvenile diabetes (I think that is what the endocrinologist told us). They tested and she did not have the gene. The testing was free since she is a sibling. We are hoping that the study of this gene will make it possible to stop this gene in it's tracks before our kids develop juvenile diabetes . Insulin is not a cure. We will find a cure. We go to Blank Children's hospital every 3 months now. We were going once every 2 weeks or once a month depending on our numbers. Our neighbor Karrine Chladek helped us. She picked our daughter up at the hospital the night Josh was diagnosed and she took her home and spent the night with and called my clients and told them my business would be closed the next day since we were at the hospital. If there is anything I can do to help you can e-mail me at _SteHn4@..._ (mailto:SteHn4@...) or call me at 515-221-2971 or 515-554-8002. I can call you right back so you do not pay for the phone call. My husband works for Archer s Midland and they match any donation we make to JDRF and we tend to cater to businesses who donate like Pella Windows and Hy Vee. They are 2 of our biggest contributor's. There are things you can do to help JDRF that do not involve giving money like volunteer work. We are very grateful to them and Karrine. Do not know what we would have done without them. Keep in touch and thanks for posting. Steve and Charlotte Henry **************Don't be the last to know - click here for the latest news that will have people talking. Guest guest
I printed out your prayer list and my boys and I will be praying every night (well - lets say most every night- just in case - I don't want to lie). I'm so thankful too that you have you little guy. I have had friends who have lost their children and it is just the saddest thing in the world - so I rejoice with you!!! Blessings to You, ********************************************************************************\ *********************************************************************** Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 14:27 ________________________________ From: " tbniesh@... I am so sorry that it's taken til today to get an update out on Asa. I wanted to wait a few days to see what his levels were at night, so I knew more of our prayer needs and what to pray for specifically. THANK YOU for your patience! Asa is doing QUITE WELL right now. The Lord is really helping him bounce back quickly, and each new day brings a step closer to his looking his norm. His levels are slowly seeing more consistency, and we're working on getting the midday levels down lower (they're still running 350+ every day) but we're certain that it will happen soon, as we feel God's hand in so much of what's already happened, and we're trusting in him to get it all worked out. The evening insulin (which is a 24 hr long-lasting one) was too high initially, so we've had to adjust that as well and we're now seeing *better results. It's all still a work in progress, and I know that it could take a lot longer than it already has, so I'm not burying my head in the sand, but rather just waiting it all out, knowing that it will take time. I think overall we are VERY pleased with the results so far-- which is a great blessing. I know that many have asked how they can help, and quite honestly, at this point, I'm really not altogether sure! While I was at the hospital with Asa, we were totally blessed with meals from both the Home Schooling group, and a few people from our church. (Can I just say how AMAZING PATH 23 people are??? WOW-- you guys are truly a bright light from the Lord in a dark time for us-- thank you!) We were blessed with groceries, meals, and even Christmas presents for the children! At this point, I've got Tom home til the holidays are over. I was expecting that he'd be back at work next week, but I think he's now seen the amount of work involved in what will happen in our daily life here, and I think he's planning on being here all of next week. The Lord DOES answer prayers-- and that is a HUGE relief to me, as I'm not sure how all of this will work once he's back at work. (guess he's too young to retire, huh?) One of our biggest concerns right now, is actually coming from Aiden (9 1/2) who is really having his issues that are flaring up. (ADHD, Sensory Processing, and a few other things as well) He's really struggling, which in turn makes the REST of us struggle in dealing with him. I know it's a matter of adjustment for everyone, but keeping him occupied enough so he doesn't have major meltdowns is taking all of our energy. Please pray for him, and that the Lord will be merciful to him AND to us in this matter. With all of Asa's health issues now, it gets harder and harder to deal with meltdowns from Aiden, as you can imagine. Keeping him busy inside and outside of the home is a wise idea at this point. Playdates are a great help in this area -- so if anyone local is up for that, let me know. At this point, Asa's levels have to be checked pre-breakfast, pre-lunch, pre-dinner, pre-bedtime, 12midnight, and 3am. It seems that Mom's destined not to get to sleep many nights til AFTER that 3am check, so as you can imagine, I'm exhausted right now. I think because it's all so new and I'm not sure where the levels are going to be-- low or high, etc, that I'm not able to sleep without knowing for sure. Time will help this, I am sure. One thing that we keep becoming more and more aware of, is just how BLESSED we truly are that we have our little man with us today. The Lord has allowed us to hold onto him and we couldn't be more thankful. Each day we've heard from a different specialist or friend in the medical field, and the fact that Asa is alive and well, is a miracle that we won't forget anytime soon. Please join us in thanking GOD for that miracle, because it was totally his mercy. Here are our current prayer needs-- ~That Asa's midday levels continue to lower and balance out quickly ~That we are able to figure out which foods affect him in what manner so we can keep him balanced ~That we get the evening insulin levels figured out effectively and that he doesn't " bottom out " in the middle of the nights, but remains consistent ~That he continues to grow stronger and healthier, and that his immune system becomes super tough and strong. ~That we are able to occupy Aiden's time inside and outside the home so his issues don't cause a disturbance in what we need to do to care for Asa's immediate needs. ~that mom is able to survive with little sleep, and that sickness stays AWAY from our home throughout the winter months. ~That we are able to get a routine down that works for the ENTIRE family ~That the Lord would provide a person to come and be a " nanny " -- since this is what we need on a long-term basis with our special needs issues for both boys, the homeschooling needs, and physical needs, etc The list of our requirements seems to be growing on a daily basis-- but we trust the Lord to meet those needs with the right person at the right time. (so pray that mom can survive til then maybe?) Think that's it-- Once again-- THANK YOU for all of your prayers-- we wouldn't be surviving without them-- I guarantee you that! We feel those prayers, and we feel your concerns and well wishes and we are blessed. Again-- feel free to pass on this update to whomever you feel is interested, because I'm sure that I've missed people in the process. Guest guest
Oh... that is great...Jeannie Mistletoe is from New Jersey...Jeannie is one of the most informed people on this network. Did JDRF get ahold of you? We are having a workshop this month about insulin pumps. JDRF is working on some of the insurance companies to get insulin pumps covered by insurance. I would like to get Josh on a pump because he get's so many injections. How is your little guy handling the shots? We also need to get him a medical alert bracelet. I had 300 business cards made up about diabetes. I have the signs and symptoms on 1 side and the quick fix antedotes on the other side. I give them to everyone he comes into contact with like his bus drivers all his teachers, etc. I know you are worried and you are sleep deprived right now. The medical care is redundent and we get so tired of writing all the numbers down calling the doctars, adjusting the medication but it does get easier with time and we are just so lucky our kids are ok. Hang in there. Charlotte **************Don't be the last to know - click here for the latest news that will have people talking.
