To anyone that can -please help:

Subj: Question for a 63year old fine business man to regain his

speech, Please Help

My ex husband Mike ____ DOB 12-8-44 lives in a

nursing home he is eight months out from his second stroke. I believe

he wants to talk and has made sounds with me and tries . His facility

has not been providing any speech therapy of substance . I

terminated the speech therapist yesterday at a care plan meeting

because she could not even tell me when she saw him last or tired to

help him also at this care plan meeting she refused to discuss her

reasons, she was very disappointing in general and was possibly

terminated from the Hospital for poor communication skills herself.

As I evaluated her demeanor and Mike together, He did not want her to

help him any longer by the way he looked at her and me letting me

know she has not been truthful in helping him, her repore was harsh

for him and myself , she was curt and annoyed to even be ask a

general question.I want him to have therapy that is going to benefit

him to regain speech. He is on medicare/state medi medi I think, and

under the care of the state. He has no speech therapy and has not had

any of any significant form in my opinion, I find this difficult for

him on top of the courage it takes for him to preserver , which he

has taken great strides with his\ mobility, movement, etc. Now the

current facility, ______ in ____ Ca, has suggested I bring in

private help. I an not in a position to do that financially I am a

chronic cancer survivor myself on disability. My question is what are

his options now. Who can help and he is just becoming Mobil but its

difficult to get him out of the facility for small outings in

general. WE want a good speech therapist to be recommended and

supplied , he is going for a swallowing test and I was told this

would help determine where he was in speech regain from the test, is

this true? I am thanking you for you time and attention to this mans

ability to talk again.

I am privileged to oversee his care out of genuine concern.

Thank You to allow me to speak on his behalf and appreciate all input

from all organizations this letter is sent copies to. Thank You

everyone. looking forward to suggestions and all responces.

It would seem if the current facility has terminated their current

speech therapist...surely they are actively searching for a replacement.

Many nursing homes use contract services as well. I would recommend she

discuss this with his case manager. Is it possible Debra might observe

some speech sessions to get an idea of what's really going on. Eight

months post second stroke is a long time to not receive quality therapy.

I don't really understand the comment about the swallow study. This

type of study will only tell them if he (Mike) is able to eat and drink

by mouth safely without risk of contracting a pneumonia; what diet

modifications might need to be made.

I would stay in constant and frequent contact with the nursing home;

just my two-cents!

Debra - I suggest Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

There is a group entitled NeuroHBOT. I just saw a post for a

new group starting that address' how to fund it. So that group may

have some answers as to how to afford. Although, under this

circumstance, maybe insurance will pay it.

To learn about it - get book The Oxygen Revolution - Harsch...

and the other one, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - Neubauer is good too.

In a nut shell - this therapy is the only thing that can actually

heal his brain enough so he can regain function. In fact, look for

Dr. Harsch's web site - he's located in Louisiana. He's got a video

of the recovery of a boy who sustained a massive brain injury. The

boy is not perfect but he was sitting in a wheel chair unable to hold

up his head and had no communication skill to I believe walking

independantly with a cane and he works a basic job.

I did a 40 dive session w/ my globally dypraxic/vaccine injured/heavy

metal poisened son in September. There was another group while we

were there 2 young men who had strokes, both were speaking and one

woman who had MS. Our group had 3 boys w/ CP and my son.

Speech therapy is stimulation but that's not going to come close to

healing the brain injury.

Best of luck,

If he is in a facility that does not provide services he needs then you could

make an argument about transferring him to another facility. You should speak

with his social worker who could explain to you how this is feasible. If speech

is his main problem there is no question he should receive speech theapy

regardless of his swallowing test.

A swallowing study is usually done to check his swallowing. He could be

aspirating when he drinks and sometimes they will recommend using thickened

fluids or a tube feeding.
