Myra, I don't want to cause an uproar but I felt it was important to

speak up. Regardless of how you feel about any connection between

autism and vaccines, this book is not going to give you an unbiased

view of the science. Dr. Bernadine Healey, the former director of

the National Institutes of Health, has gone on the record as saying

that there has not been significant enough research into whether there

is a subset of children for whom vaccines (or vaccines according to

the current schedule) would be harmful and that you cannot say there

is no possible connection for a subset of children. In fact, she has

said, essentially, that public health officials are afraid to look at

this issue because they are afraid of what they might find. That is a

scary thing to hear from a former public health official and it

impacts not only autism but many diseases/conditions.

FYI, Dr. Offit does not treat children with autism -- he develops

vaccines and has made a fortune from the pharmaceutical industry as a

vaccine developer and industry spokesperson. Moreover, the vaccine he

developed is not problem free, there are severe bowel obstruction

reports linked to Dr. Offit's own vaccine in a significant number of

children. He apparently has even been reprimanded by Congress for his

conflicts of interest on vaccine issues. I would not look to this

book as proving or disproving anything, as Dr. Healy said, the

research has not been done to disprove a link for some kids.
