Guest guest
Go to Prompt's website and email them and they will get back to you with a list. Unfortunately their database sorts by zip code, not by city. If you're in a large metro area it might be hard to pinpoint a therapist. The first list I got was practically useless. It had six therapists and none were actively using prompt or they were in the schools. I went back (before we moved my son had therapy at the Prompt Institute) and spoke with the woman who does the searches. She too is frustrated with their database so don't get upset with them! There was a list of about 20 therapists near me, but most were in the schools and only one works privately with kids. Fortunately she's a Prompt instructor! Deb highly recommended her. What area are you in btw, perhaps someone here has a recommendation. Guest guest
Hi there thanks everyone. I did send in the request with the 5 zips. We're in Northern CA BTW, sorry I didnt mention. Has anyone gotten EI to pay for a PROMPT certified therapist (my little guy just turned 2). His therapist has been taking his hand and putting under her chin or in front of her mouth for certain things. During his initial eval this seemed to work and he did start to use his hand on his own mouth and was finally able to mouth " bu " for bubble, but not so much success yesterday in therapy. Unfortunately with the holidays we havent had much consistency. Starting in Feb we'll have one hour each week and hoping to see some movement then. Anyway, using the hands like that is somewhat similar to what PROMPT does isnt it? I realize PROMPT is probably a whole system tho.. Just curious. Thanks Leigh
Guest guest
Hi Leigh- Yes, we are currently getting EI to reimburse us for PROMPT therapy. It takes place outside of his natural environment (at the Children's Hospital, only one we could find) and the justification was that it takes him so long to warm up to a new provider that they wanted it to be in place in plenty of time for his third birthday. Alternatively, you may find a PROMPT therapist willing to contract through EI. The only thing I know is if you don't request it, you won't have a chance of getting it, so it doesn't hurt to ask does it? We have only had one session so I can't tell you a lot about PROMPT, except that her level of experience is so much greater than any therapist so far. The other therapists who don't know PROMPT who have tried to use tactile cuing could not get him to cooperate. But, then you know how I feel about EI therapists in my county! She even told us that all the sounds the other therapist said he had mastered we have to re-learn the right way, UGH! I am helpful this will be the step we need to increase his intelligibility. Guest guest
this may not be an option for everyone but this is what we did... I found a couple of PROMPT therapists through the database...not one had any openings. We have a wonderful SLP at my son's school (private, special needs). She looked at the PROMPT stuff and thought it worthwhile. We proposed to the school if they would give her the time off, and pay her expenses - we would fund the training session ($750). We had the money at the time and felt it was a good investment. The school liked it b/c its a communications disorders school. She's been using PROMPT since last spring - we've seen surges but it's not a cure all. We've been working on T and D forever (since summer) and are just now starting to hear that sound intermittently. Which could be considered a miracle since my son did not speak (again) until 5.5 yo (he is now 7.5 and very expressive although difficult to understand). Just my two cents...good luck, > > Hi there > thanks everyone. I did send in the request with the 5 zips. We're in > Northern CA BTW, sorry I didnt mention. Guest guest
I am thinking of putting my son that is 10yrs old and still non-verbal in PROMPT. Do you think it might help someone that old? We have been in regular speech and OT (Sensory/Auditory). He will say Duh/Kuh for drink, very low whispers. Buh for bye and Dah for Dad and that's about it. Just curious. Thanks!!!!
