Guest guest
PLEEEASE PLEEASE do NOT interpret this as being about working moms.. Nobody said anything against working moms,--except those defending Palin to twist the argument--- the most that was mentioned was giving up careers that required 60-80h a week after realizing money alone was not taking care of their child's needs. Nobody runs for governor or VP of US just to make a living..I am a working mom too, and I do it for money, to pay all that needs to be apid for special needs, I work at night, early mornings, weekends and whenever I can because I have to as so many of us do. This is NOT about working moms indeed... Elena From: daustinjoe <daustinjoe@...> Subject: [ ] Re: OK group hug!!!! Date: Thursday, September 4, 2008, 10:22 PM I agree with you. Guest guest
Thank you ! I was so upset seeing all of the postings today about working moms. I am one of " those " moms. As a matter of fact, I might even be the teacher of one of your special needs children. I will be point blank with all of you- I joined this group for support, not to get beat up. I do enough of that to myself! I work because I have great insurance as an educator. My daughter is 26 months old, and she isn't getting any special children's health insurance or SSI, or any other support. I have two other children who are involved in many activities- their lives should NOT stop because their sister has special needs. My special needs daughter has speech 4 times a week, OT, PT, swimming, therapeutic riding once a week each, book time, 1/2 hour speech time with me every night, joint compression and brushing therapy every night by me, and I am consistent with the oil therapy. I DO FOR HER!! I put ALL of my children's needs before my own. I know I teach my children, and probably yours in my classroom, not to be judgmental towards others- it's too bad more adults can't follow the same advice. I was quite shocked to see how much time some of you have on your hands during the day to judge others with your many posts! It is almost 11pm and I have laundry to do, make lunches, layout the kids clothes, and the list goes on and on... did I mention be up by 5 am? I don't complain though- I DO FOR MY KIDS! Nobody is allowed to say their opinion anymore about whether a mother should work if they have a special needs child until they stop first and think " will this hurt a working mom in this group? " And once again since most of you probably deleted this since it has " Palin " in the subject ...before- all of you may have missed this true story. Imagine your 2 toddlers in critical condition. December 18, 1972 Joe's wife and three children are in an automobile accident while Christmas shopping. Guest guest
I avoided all the submissions that had Palin in the subject line primarily because, except for the fact that she has a child with Down's, what is there in her life that may be relevant to the purpose of this group - and that is seeking support, advice, ideas, a shoulder, etc., in dealing with our kiddoes with apraxia (and related issues). The only thing I know about Palin is what has come out in the media and at the coverage of the convention - none of which has anything to do with apraxia. I suppose we can relate to the fact that she is raising a child with needs but does anyone on this line actually know Palin? Can we offer anything except our uninformed, biased views on whether a mother of a special needs child should work outside the home or not? Whose business is it of anyone's that I work outside the home - I'm a divorced (from an exH who couldn't handle raising a special needs child), now single, mother of a special needs kiddo. I work more than 40 hours a week in my career so that I can provide my son with a good, healthy home, with food on the table, a sturdy roof over our heads, and the financial security we lacked when I was married. I give as much time as I possibly can to my son, his schooling, his therapies, playing, having fun, and so on. I try hard every minute of every day to provide my son as great an example as I can of a person who is dedicated to family first (yes, I take off of work to spend school days off with my son; yes, I take off of work if my son is sick; yes, I leave work early many days so that I know I will have time to spend working on therapies and homework only to put in the lost work hours at home after he is asleep; yes, I have taken days off of work to go on field trips and to be the " wicked witch " at a Halloween party where I taught all the kids about the wonders of dry ice; yes, those 4 hour IEP meetings come before any of my clients or coworkers, and so on). I try to show my son that, even with the busy-ness of our lives, there is a place for volunteerism (I volunteer on three committees for the PTA and I'm on the Board of Directors of an organization dedicated to empowering adults with developmental delays to live, work, and survive/enjoy life independently, my son and I both participate in fundraising for various organizations, and I hopefully will still be among the people who may help with guidance to the Cherab Organization), that sharing our time and lives with friends and extended family, and working through the curves that life give us all is what will help build his character, and his life. All I can I hope is that I provide my son with an example of strength, honesty, perseverance. Am I any different than any of you who do not work outside the home? Are these goals any different than yours? Would they be any different than Sara Palin's? To those who do not " work outside of the home, " I would never even consider slighting or judging the work you do - I would never question your dedication to your family or your choice. Nor should any of you question those of us who do work outside the home while also raising our families. There are many reasons we walk the paths of our lives - sometimes by choice, sometimes by necessity, sometimes a combination of the two or other reasons. No ones' reasons, though, should ever be doubted or questioned until you have walked in someone else's shoes. We are all members of this email line because we care for and love our kiddoes, and want them all to succeed. What more is there to say on that score? And as for Palin, my understanding is that she started out as a committee member on the PTA (as well as being a hockey mom) and moved into the political arena because of her love of her family, Alaska, and public servce - doesn't that say a lot about where her mindset was and remains? I have to be honest, I'm not voting for McCain and Palin because the republican party has a platform I don't agree with - it has nothing to do with the personalities or personal life-reasons of either McCain or Palin. But let's not unnecessarily make this group a political soapbox. We're here for our own kiddoes, not Palin's, McCain's, Obama's, or Biden's. So, as suggested, let's just give ourselves a huge group hug for the work we all do, for our kiddoes, for our tenacity in securing what is best for our kiddoes, and for having the strength to live the lives we each have. Guest guest
FWIW I stay home, have worked from home and have not. I think as says you do what is right for your family. There is a lot to be said for kids getting different things from adults other than their parents. I am sure the grandpa thing is a real blessing for your child. We don't have that opportunity here but I am glad you do. I also think there are limits to email and people may have come across differently than their view. Anyway, mom to mom, I say cheers to you! > > > > Nobody is allowed to say their opinion anymore about whether a > mother > > should work if they have a special needs child until they stop first > > and think " will this hurt a working mom in this group?
