Guest guest
Wish I could help more but am pretty new here myself. Did you read The Late Talker book? If not I can recommend that. This group is very helpful but for me can be overwhelming. My son also stuffs his mouth and I'm afraid he's going to choke. I've never noticed it with drinks, just food. (overwhelming in a good way) Kate > > My son is 29 months and he is diagnosed Autistic. He is non verbal. He > does say some words when he wants to only. Guest guest
YESSSSS!!!! I've noticed this big time with Asa lately! I can't recall which foods he does this with, but most definitely YES-- I've noticed that he does this with different textured foods. About two weeks ago it was more of a problem because he all but choked several times because he was stuffing so much in at one time! becky In a message dated 4/2/2008 11:55:28 P.M. My son eats most foods fine, but if you give him something hard like nuts, he stuffs his mouth until he can't chew. Then he cries because he can't chew. My solution so far is to just not give him the problem foods, but obviously you can't do that if all food is a problem. **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. Guest guest
A speech language pathologist can diagnose apraxia. BTW... and someone here may correct me on this, but I believe that if you son does use words sometimes... even if they are not clear... he is verbal... it's just that his expressive language is low. He may need help with articulation. I would recommend that you look around for an SLP who incorporates ABA into his/her speech therapy techniques. I know of at least one of those in our area (Northern Virginia) and she is supposed to be a miracle worker. If you can't find one on your own, contact your local or state autism society... they should have a list of speech therapist who specifically work with autistic children. The autistic society may also have recommendations on how you can finance it (if your insurance doesn't cover it). You know your son can speak, but he needs assistance speaking more. > > > > My son is 29 months and he is diagnosed Autistic. He is non > verbal. He > > does say some words when he wants to only.
