Guest guest
cnickerson37@... I don't think you are understanding the use of the word retarded. The word actually means delayed or slowed, not non-development or atypical or even stupid. You can have growth retardation whenthe child isin utero and the child's brain is absolutely fine. Clothing that is fire retardant, it still catches fire, just at a slower pace. While this may seem offensive to your ears, your dr is accurate in his description of the speech delay, it is a delay, slowed developmnet of speech, but the development is there, it just takes longer. BTW, as a sibling to a Downs Syndrome sister, the Mentally Retarded person's brain does develop. That statement is incaccurate and highly offensive. Their development , intellectually, is at a slower pace, however. Most children with DS are now expected to graduate from high school, unlike 40 years ago. Science has come a long way and we know these valuable human beings can and do learn and read and write and socialize and hold jobs. They are not blobs whose brains are not developing in any manner. That is called being in a coma. Many of these MR adults are actually starting to get accepted to community colleges. I would ever call that a brain that is not developing or learning. Guest guest
I leave using MR to the doctors. Unfortunately that word has such bad vibes to it that using atypical development sound better to a parent. yes its a label but MR is a strong label. Parents want to give up when they hear that. so if using another a label to keep parents hopeful, I will do that as a special educator. My goal is get those parents to feel empowered that they can help their child. I understand what your saying and i explain MR like that but all parents hear is MR and unfortunately so the world. but thanks for giving such a great definition of MR, many people don't realize that's what it really means chris Re: [ ] mental retardation cnickerson37@ cogeco.ca I don't think you are understanding the use of the word retarded. Guest guest
Sharon, What 'sold' me on NACD before I got there was reading the message board and the posts from the mom with the DS child in regular grade 6 who was pretty much an honours student! I looked at my own son, who was in special education grade 6 at the time and realized that if this child could overcome, so could my child overcome. It is about working the neural connections and discovering what works for each individual. And you know what.... my child WAS being short-changed.... all because I didn't know any better for so many years! Janice [sPAM]Re: [ ] mental retardation cnickerson37@... Guest guest
Cayce also alluded to vaccinations as being a causitive factor in cases of mental retardation. Cheers, Robin Mental Retardation I`m floored,to find out, that in over half of the readings he did for retarded people, cerebrosoinal misalignments, which impeded normal physical and mental functioning, were mentioned. Also causes stress, preventing normal functioning,of the nerves and glands. On top,of being autistic,he was diagnosed as mentaly retarded. My son,i`m talking about.Tina ------------------------------------
