Guest guest
My 19-month old son has started receiving speech services with Early Intervention and has had about 4 sessions so far (1x a week). The words that he uses in a functional way and are understandable are " daddy " (just started 1-2 wks ago), and " ay " (hi/bye - which are consistent). He mostly points and signs whenever he needed something communicated. He can imitate /p/, /m/, /b/, /t/, /ah/, /ee/ sounds in isolation but has difficulty putting sounds together. I spoke with the speech therapist yesterday and she is suspecting apraxia. I am a special ed teacher and I have somewhat of an idea what it is and how to help my son improve his skill. But being a parent is totally different from being a teacher. I am scared but determined to help my son. I have a couple of questions in my head, and I would appreciate it if someone can enlighten me. 1. Is 19-months still too early to have a diagnosis of apraxia/dyspraxia? 2. When should i demand (is it a strong word?) for an increase of speech services? 3. I have read some articles on using fish oil and i wanted to try it out regardless of my son's diagnosis. What would brand would you recommend? Where do I get it (online/store)? How would I know the dosage? I am very thankful for this forum. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
