Did JJ start with objects, pictures or words? How long has he been doing

PECS? Is he considered severe, advanced? Sorry for all the questions, but

I'm trying to get a good realistic picture of Seth. I don't think of him as

severe, but maybe he really is.

How do they get him to carry his book around?? That's my biggest problem

with Andy.

That is GREAT!!!!! Seth is at 0-3 months with language too. He just makes

those back of the throat noises most of the time. Like he's hacking up a fur

ball! LOL I am sure he could get the pictures if they tried it. They are

putting the pictures on his " objects " , but it seems to me that they are

making twice the work. For him and them. Do they use TEACH or ABA or

anything with JJ? It's so exciting that his world is opening like this. I

like the PECS system, I just don't think with Seth that it is used

aggressively enough. Please tell me more?

JJ is profoundly retarded, totally non-verbal. His language skills are 3

months!! If we talk IQ(yuck) he between 15 & 20 points, JJ started with

pictures(icons) in the ST room, then was moved to the classroom. PECS was

started in September about 3 weeks after school started. No one at school

thought he was intelligent enough to be able to do this program. There is

more going on in that head than they know. We just have to get it out.

I hear this!!

Andy's world opened up with the pictures and symbols, but we still don't

have spontaneous requests beyond taking us places and watching his eyegaze.

He Ooo's and Ahh's...and lately he's been working very hard at actual

speech, poor kid! There's so much he wants to say!

I went to Micheals...they have different types of the acrylic stuff. One is

called Pour-On. They talk about it on the PECS page (I think) but don't

tell you where to get it. I couldn't find it on the Internet for antyhing.

But there it was.

I " m planning to use it for something besides communication, but thought I'd

share. :)

Also at s I found a vibrating pen that holds little gel pens, a

black dry erase board with flourescent markers, and photo holdesr (little

flimsy albums) on sale. That's also where they have the Xyron

laminator/sticker thing, but not the laminate cartridge, the stinkers.

Diane, his teacher. did take a class in TEACH this summer. Don't know if

she learned anything. Up to this point he has had no behavior plan.

Before Christmas I put up the red flag---I needed help! So our service

coordinator started working on geting us some services. They are just now

writing the work order and looking for the right person to provide services.

I figure another month before we get behavior management. Bummer.

Hope Andy is feeling okay, and that you got SOME sleep. With Seth, they

still use the 2-trainer method, even to eat. The " behind " person has been

able to back off a whole lot more now, but still has to be there. That

really makes it impossible for me to use much PECS at home with my husband

working second shift. I use the things he knows WELL, but don't even attempt

things that I feel he would need help with. Is Andy at objects and pictures?

I'll have to get one of the vibrating gel pens...maybe he would actually

hold the pen for a second instead of doing that little backhand throw of his!

LOL Sounds like you had a good little shopping spree. :-)

Is the behavior management for home or school? Seth has no chance at school

to do anything because his aide, class aide, therapist or teacher are on him

every second. He is kept sooo busy that I don't think he has time to stim or

anything. They always have the next " job " to do, and he LOVES " jobs " ! LOL

I think his schedule changes every 15 minutes. We had behavior management

for home, but that didn't work. They said to set the house up like school

and keep him on that schedule. YEAH, RIGHT!!!!

One more snoopy question....

Do you konw, did they use teh " 2 trainer " method to get him going? Iv'e

been to their workshop, and the trouble I have is getting someone to

help...and then...that we don't have him in a super controlled environment.

So figuring this all out is a challenge. But I " m closer tonight than others.

Joan & Anyone Else Who Might Know:

I'm heavily into PECS or is it PICS? I'm still not clear on all of

this, but we're starting with photographs with velcro on a schedule. Our

SSAH worker suggested that we use the photograph, the pic (drawing) & also a

picture of the sign (ASL), with the idea being to gradually phase out the

photographs (it can get pretty expensive taking pictures of everything).

Joan, I've been using your site: " http://trainland.tripod.com/pecs.htm " .

It's great! Now, at the end of this site they include 4 pages of signs

(ASL). Where can I get more of these? Also, does anyone know if there are

any pics(PECS) for Sensory Integration stuff, i.e. the surgical brush, some

fidget toys, etc? I could just use photos for these, but I thought I'd ask.

I know what you mean about the boardmaker being to expensive. I am making my

own communication book and I have found a lot of sites that have pictures

that are perfect for the book. Because Trisha has poor eyesight, I am making

her pictures 3x3 which seems a little easier for her to see. I just copy the

pictures into word then print them out and put clear contact paper over for

protection put velcro or magnet on the backs and I am done.

From seeing some of t he suggestions on this list I purchased some magnet

paper over the week end and made a few pictures on that, I like it but will

have to do a few at a time because it's a little high for my budget. I have

gotten some really good ideas from this list especially about communication

and I want to thank you all for your info and h elp.

Boardmaker, but it is far too expensive for us to buy . The School Boards

here have it & I could perhaps access it that way ( the Special Ed teacher

might let me spend a morning on it.) Now, Picture This is less expensive I

think. Would you mind telling me where I could order it & how much you paid

for it? Thanks so much. I wish we lived closer to Virginia! I would come

over & visit your picture library! You're so kind to offer your help &

expertise. How's Cameron doing? BTW, my & do their share

of sibling fighting as well!

are you in canada???? please email me privately about boardmaker if your

truly wanting it, there might be a way...i found a way for the parents in my

area to purchase it for 199 versus 400 dollars..we saved half price and its

all legal... picture this is the greatest i think... in my opinion if your a

mom on a budget, buy picture this..it runs like 59.95 and has zillions of

picture from paper towels to baby brush to green beans to broom to

bedroom....i have an order form from the company i will cut and paste...its

much cheaper to buy direct////price may have gone up sincei got mine last

summer...i will doin the morning when my tping skills and brain are

if you know about those two sites, then i am sure you know about these other

ones.

1.www.dotolearn.com- has lots of free pecs too.black and white version, but

still very good.. also has printable schedules already outlined.. if your in

a hurry, they are great to have on hand....

2. i think joan mentioned this one a while back, but its

www.usevisualstrategies.com-- has some really cool pecs for OT like brushes

and platform swing.

3. my favorite because ashton loooooveeeeeeeesssssss disney and it motivates

her is www.disneyclipart.com--- i have made her a pre primer site word story

book/flashcard set using the disney pictures along with site words.... she

really enjoys it and is picking it up quickly versus the edmark she doesnt

seem to like.

for worksheets and printout's to help with curriculm you can go to

2.www.learningpage.com ONE OF MY FAVORITES, HAS SIGN LANGUAGE NUMBERS

Also to let you know.. I went ahead and put my son in full 5days a week 3hrs a

day in a typical envir'. Going to be a test trial for the next 3 weeks. Will

keep you posted how it all goes.

Hi ,

We use PECS for Maddie. It is an acronym for Picture Exchange

Communication System. We've been using a visual strategy with Maddie since

she was probably about 3, but we used our own homemade pictures. I still

use many homemade pictures, but we switched to using the PECS version a year

and a half ago (it's more universal). We still have difficulty getting

Maddie to comprehend that those pictures ARE the item she wants, but we're

getting there. In the beginning, we just had her tap the picture and we'd

give her the item instantaneously. We've now moved onto the next phase,

which is Maddie taking the picture off the board and handing it to an adult.

Maddie does this REAL well, especially if she's hungry (it's a riot to

watch) LOL She DOES get that handing over that picture over gets her

SOMETHING, so that is big to us!! To learn more about PECS, go to

BTW, we also use a CD called Picture This. The pictures are better, bigger

and clearer; easier for Maddie and a lot of other children to understand.

oh yes nathan has been using pic/word symbols since he

was about 3yrs old, and they have haleped

tremendously. --we still use them too. shawna

You're not showing your ignorance by asking a question Donna! That's showing

you're intelligent enough to ask. :-) Pecs is picture exchange

communication system. It's the little pictures of things that the person

hands you to show you what they want. Either one pic at a time, like....a

pic of apple juice. For more advanced people, they can make a sentence strip

saying like.......I WANT APPLE JUICE PLEASE. So Monty has tried the AC

devices already? What did you think of the ones he has tried? Were any

better than others, in your opinion?

Hello & welcome to the group from me! I have been so busy this past week that I

think I have missed some posts.

The Dynamo is a small computer device that is carried around by individual's

hand or it can be strapped across chest. It uses pictures with text or,

depending on the person's needs, it can be just the text (no pics).... and you,

the parent, can record the voice output for each picture. Yopu can fit a lot of

small pictures on the Dynamo or a smaller amount of bigger pics - you can

control all of that. I don't think we can send pictures through the list e-mails

but if you'd like, I can send a small picture to the photos file.

I got the Dynamo through her school district. She has an aug. comm. eval where

they tried this out w/ her and she did marvelous... about knocked me over

because until then, communication was nil. Or mostly consisted of her bringing

me items she wanted and some use of PECS.

PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication Systems and they are the pics you

print out and laminate then velcro to surfaces (binders, etc) and the individual

brings you a picture to communicate.

I think maybe we're confused by the question, Lynn. PECS is a method of

communication. It's not really something the school " gives " to you. To get

an idea of the communication method, go to www.pecs.com.

PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication System. People who use PECS

are given objects, photos, symbols, or words that represent things to hand

over to make requests, comments, or whatever.

It begins with a one symbol exchange: photo of cookies to get a cookie or

photo of a book to read a book with you, for instnace.

Then the person learns to complete a sentence with it. Usually they use " I

want ____. " to make a request as the first sentence.

Then it becomes more complex. They choose the cards that create the

sentence ( " I went to the store yesterday " ) that is a request, comment, or

answers your question or whatever.

PECS is a great tool for teaching folks the art of communicative intent and

the need to send your message TO someone. Many kids wiht autism communicate

things--even using their photos or symbols or whatever, but they don't do

it in the presence of a communication PARTER who can hear what they say!

In that instance the person has communicative intent (wants to send a

message) but not the idea about where the message goes.

So.....

To do PECS at home is tough to answer. If your child is using a PECS system

at school, then you can ask for training and assistance to implement the

system at home.

If what you want is some photos/symbols, etc, then you can ask for

assistance in obtaining those tools from the school. In theory, they're

supposed to help with generalizing communication from school to home.

I've always just done it myself. I'm very fortunate to have a job where I

have many tools at my disposal to make things for Andy. Most families do

not. In that instance, you have to start letting them know you want to have

some tools at home--better ones than you have now--and see how they

respond. You could be pleasantly suprised!

Anyone have any experience in getting some assistance with implementing

communication systems or schedules at home in tandem with the school?

Thanks Joan! Our school uses picture icons from boardmaker. I have asked

for assistance, to no avail. They say to ask the regional center to fund it!

Up until sixth grade, 's teachers never did anything. No matter what

was in his IEP, they would not do it. For the past two years, we have had a

wonderful teacher who is learning herself to use these things -- but it does

not cross over to the parents. And it is not how you described it. It never

has developed out to questions, etc. This is a major problem with rural

communities. And they have never had a child like .
