Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I just found this group. My son turned 4 years old last week and we suspect he has apraxia, but it's been hard to get a diagnosis. He's been receiving speech therapy twice a week for the last year and a half. His therapist was the first to suspect apraxia. We took him to the neurologist last week and he says it sounds like apraxia, although he couldn't be sure because our son wouldn't cooperate at the visit. I enrolled my son in a half-day preschool in September, but his teacher said she had no time for him because of his speech issues. So I took him out and I've been homeschooling him. I feel like his speech has improved a great deal in the last 2 months just from homeschooling him, not necessarily from the therapy he's been receiving. He knows all his letters and their sounds and most of his numbers 0-25. I always wonder if he'll ever get to the point where he catches up with his peers. He sounds very babyish when he talks and a lot of what he says is hard to understand, especially to those outside our family. One thing that's been concerning me is that he has problems putting on his shoes and holding scissors, so the speech therapist is suggesting OT. Is this another off-shoot of apraxia? I know many people recommend fish oils, which I've been trying for 2 years, but he's a very picky eater and will not take it. He recognizes the taste immediately (even if I hide it in his food) and won't eat. Any product suggestions for an extremely picky eater? This kid would eat nothing but toast if I let him. We're in North Carolina (Raleigh area). Anyone else? Sorry for the long post. It's nice to be here. ~ in NC
Guest guest
I think that is terrible that any teacher would say she does not have time for your son. Regardless of pre school or not, that is not the right attitude. Jen **************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Mail. Try it now. Guest guest
The fish oil I have the most success with is Omega Brite and it is peach flavored. Jack's DAN! doctor has Jack taking 1/4 tsp. 2x a day. He takes it straight. It really tastes ok. I order direct from the supplier. I do not believe it is sold in stores but a few pharmacies on the internet sell the product. Jack also had difficulty with OT issues like scissors and holding a crayon in a tripod grasp. It would be a good idea to have OT. Id o beleive it is common to have fine motor issues along with apraxia. Have you thought about having your school district evaluate your son for a preschool disabled program to help you receive the therapies in the school district? Jack is apraxic and goes to preschool full day in an integrated classroom setting. > > Hi Everyone, > > I just found this group. Guest guest
Hi , We are in Greensboro. UNC-Chapel Hill has a speech clinic--I don't know how long the wait would be however. Our son is 3.3 yrs old and has been getting speech therapy since the end of June and is making good progress. We are off to see Kaufman in January. We use Nordic Naturals Complete Omega 3-6-9 and the EPA. We put in orange juice-- has never noticed the difference--doesn't even question the oily top to his juice! Anyway it has a lemon flavor.
