February 28 Seaside Polar Bear Plunge, Seaside Heights North Bowling Sectional, Wallington For more information on these events, please visit www.sonj.org. 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award & Hall of Fame Inductees Athlete Silver of Sewell and volunteer, Dr. Sullivan were both inducted into the SONJ Hall of Fame at the annual Awards Dinner on Friday, November 21st, at the Westin in Princeton. & Larry Hanko were also recognized with the 2008 SONJ Lifetime Achievement Awards. Special Olympics New Jersey honors outstanding athletes, volunteer, and supporters each year at the Awards Dinner. Click here for complete list of award winners. 2009 Starts Off With A Bang! The State Floor Hockey Tournament and the 2009 Winter Games highlight a very busy start to the New Year. Floor Hockey will return to the Wildwoods Convention Center on January 10th. The Winter Games will be held January 26th and 27th in North Jersey. The Games will feature Speed and Figure Skating, Alpine and Cross Country Skiing, Snowboarding, and Snowshoeing. Waves of excitement are on the rise with two upcoming Polar Bear Plunges. The January 17th Plunge in Wildwood has hit the airwaves of 98.1 WOGL as DJ's and Bill Zimpfer go head-to-head on-air to raise funds -- listen live and then donate to your favorite DJ before he takes the Wildwood Plunge. The February 28th Seaside Plunge will offer individual fundraisers of $3,000 or more the VIP treatment complete with a continental breakfast prepared by area chefs. Twenty-Four New Jersey Athletes Selected to Represent Team USA at the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games The United States team for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games has been chosen and 24 athletes from New Jersey will represent the country in Boise, Idaho, February 7th -13th. Team USA athletes will be joining the more than 100 delegations from every corner of the world. Special Olympics athletes of all ability levels will compete in seven different Winter Olympic-type sports including: alpine skiing, cross country skiing, figure skating, snowboarding, snowshoeing, speed skating and floor hockey. Throughout the week-long competition, athletes will display their athletic skill, determination and courage. Special Olympics New Jersey athletes will participate in four of the seven sports offered at the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. The Games will include up to 3,000 athletes from more than 100 countries and 6,000 volunteers. Competition and other activities will take place in communities and venues throughout Idaho. Snow Bowl - Giants Stadium, East Rutherford Special Olympics New Jersey and The New York Football Giants invite you to join us for the Third Annual Snow Bowl Flag Football Tournament at Giants Stadium! This official 6-on-6 flag football tournament, with light blocking is played over two days: the Competitive Division will play on Saturday, February 7th. The Recreation Division will play on Sunday, February 8th. Teams are allowed up to 15 players. All players must be 18 years of age or older to participate. All teams are guaranteed three games on the Giants Stadium field. For more information and to register, go to SnowBowl.sonj.org. Athlete Spokespeople Are Needed If you know of an athlete who is interested in speaking on behalf of Special Olympics, encourage them to sign up for the Global Messenger Training Session. The training will take place on Saturday, February 7th at the Special Olympics New Jersey Sports Complex. This is a great opportunity for an athlete to take their Special Olympics involvement to the next level. Look in the LOCKER ROOM for the nomination form, or email MW@... for more information. Coaches' Corner Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding - " On-Snow " practice time is available through January 18th at Mountain Creek in Vernon. Click here for important information or email EFS@.... To take part in this training, coaches must call or email at least one week in advance of the day you wish to have your athlete practice. Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing - " On-Snow " practice is available at the High Point Cross Country Ski Center, High Point, on Wednesdays, January 7th, 14th and 21st, as well as Saturday, January 17th.
