Guest guest
Jeanne, I don't know where you live, but that is not true in nj. My 3yr old is starting it in 2 months. Many districts lie about what services are available. My friend was told the same thing about needing to be 5, but then we started meeting people who have kids 3 and 4 getting after school programs. There are tests that the child takes in order to see if they qualify along with parent & teacher recommendations. Good luck. Jami Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry [ ] can anyone help Jeanne, My son is turning 5 next year. I was told that there is no home based therapy once the child reached kindergarten. He gets ABA 5hrs/wk at home now. Does not mean he won't get it once he turns school age? I thought you may know the answer. Thank you. Ying chanying7666@... Guest guest
Across the board policies like this are illegal since each child's plan is supposed to be individualized. Of course, school districts try to do this all the time. If they say this is their policy, ask them to document it. I'm sure they'll never agree to it since they would be admitting to an illegal practice, but it's worth asking. Make sure the you have good data to support the need for ABA and have an advocate at the IEP meeting. thanks . > > > Jeanne, > My son is turning 5 next year. Guest guest
Hi Jeanne, My name is Terri Mortellito. I was referred to you by Laurie Prefer who provides speech therapy to my son . is apraxic and has been working with Laurie for over 3.5 years. Laurie suggested I reach out to you for some guidance. attends Dogwood Hill Elementary School in Oakland, NJ. He is in a self-contained SLD class with a mix of 3rd-4th graders. He was diagnosed with Apraxia at age 3.5. He currently recieves speech in school 4 times per week and works with Laurie once a week. He also works with Dr. Farrell (FDU Teaneck) to learn to read via the Orton-Gillingham method. As has gotten older, it is apparent that the Apraxia is a " global " issue in his academics. I do not know of any schools that specifically focus on apraxic children. Please let me know if there are. I know that he needs additional services built into his IEP for the coming year (his planning meeting is set for April). Currently, I pay for Laurie, Dr. Farrell and he also attends one additonal OT session at Valley Hospital Center for Child Development per week. I was wondering if you could guide me as to how I can request the district to pay for these services. He really needs to work with Dr. Farrell at least twice a week and needs at least 3-4 days of OT. His success so far has come from the repetition of these services each week. I contacted the SPAN of Bergen County but there is a fee of up to $1,000 and for me that would be a hardship. I am a single mother and 's services cost me almost that each month. I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you Terri Mortellito Cell: 908-419-3475
