Guest guest
Hi Karianne, What state/country are you in? His IEP goals are too broad and clearly he's not going to achieve the yearly goal which is why we need to get 3 and 6 month goals into the IEP so you can prove the placement and/or therapy/therapist is inappropriate. We need to act fast because he's 6 years old -not progressing (much?) all year thus far and this school year is almost over. Is extended school year (or ESY) written into his IEP? Do you have help with advocating? If not a professional perhaps there is a parent of an older child who is doing well here who can go in and help you advocate? Are there other children like your son in his school where you can team up with the other parent/s to present your needs as a group? Is there a place you can take him for therapy on the weekends or after work hours? Do you have private evaluations to help support your child's position of why he needs one on one therapy? Have you seen these two pages? They may help a bit but we do need to secure you much more assistance. Perhaps once we have a better idea where you are we can find resources and support sources to help. Speech therapy matrix http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/therapymatrix.html Reasons for one on one therapy for apraxia http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/therapyintensity.html Just remember you don't have to sign the IEP at the meeting no matter how much they say you have to. If they say you " have " to or say anything else that sounds odd -just smile and say " That's interesting. Can you please put that in writing for me and explain why? " They won't put anything in writing that could be used against them in a court of law! Also don't forget the tape recorder...did you read the advocacy chapter of The Late Talker book? That should help too. Let us know! Best, =====
Guest guest
Hi. Thank you for your reply. I live in illinois. My neighbor who has a son with the same SLP does not really care for the SLP either so I can talk to her about it. I do have advocate my Aunt who is a SLP, which helps alot. I don't like to depend on her to much so I am doing ALOT of researching today and getting ready for the meeting. Funny, you mention ESY. He is qualified for ESY for walk in speech therapy which is only probably going to be 30 min a week. I will not know more than that until I go for the meeting on the 25th. Something else I am going to really push for. You gave me a great idea I am going to call Easter Seals (where Connor goes for OT) and see if they can do a eval so support the postion that he need 1 on 1 therapy. Thank you so much. I will let you know what happens. kiddietalk <kiddietalk@...> wrote: Hi Karianne, What state/country are you in?
