Guest guest
I just thought I'd share. No one else would really understand. Yesterday I was having a poor me day. Why my child, when will she talk, why are we getting ready for therapy when we should be getting ready for play groups,I'm sick of running from therapy to therapy, how much more $ can we spend, ect. ect. (you get the idea) Anyway we were about to leave the house to go to p/t when I asked my daugther if she had to use the potty. (training not going so well) She looked at me said no and then said " bagaan " . I said What? Again she said bagaan and i still didn't get it so I said mommy's ears are broken can you show me. She gave me a look like duh no! and just kept repeating " bagaan, bagaan " .At this point I was tearing up , I started to point to things around the room and she just kept saying no, no. We had to leave so I had her repeat the word on the way to therapy calling several friends and family to see if they could guess. No one could. She went into therapy and I called my mom crying and screaming, Why, Why, Why! Then we went through the day , first o/t, then p/t, and finally s/t. repeated the word to each therapist over and over but we could not get it. Well tonight I took her hand to walk up the stairs, she pulled her hand away and said " no bagaan " and started walking up the stairs alone. I finally got it!! BIG GIRL DUH! I cried again this time saying yes you are a big girl.
Guest guest
Oh, this had ME tearing up! I am glad to hear other parents have a 'poor me' day too ... I think I have been in denial about my son's apraxia ... and what it means. Will he ever talk normally? Now I am so scared and powerless feeling. I know he is smart (and very funny and very loving) but who else will see that? Half the time I can't understand what he is saying either, so I know others can't. He is three and a half. I asked my husbnad last night, how many words does L have, really? Hubby said oh 15 -20. I said, oh? What are they? He could only list Dada, Papa, Mama, Nana and munKEY (L loves monkeys). I think me and hubby have been way into denial about this. L is in speech therapy for 2x a week .. and is verbal now ... which is a huge improvement! But now I think of how far he still has to go. I got the ProEFA ... I need tips on getting it in him though! It does not mix well in milk (found that out this morning, when I tried a sip ... NASTY). I AM SORRY FOR HIJACKING YOUR POST. This just seems like a 'safe place' to vent all my feelings. ________________________________ From: taranowakowski <taranowakowski@...> Sent: Thursday, March 26, 2009 9:00:16 PM Subject: [ ] A better day for my I just thought I'd share. Guest guest
Understand completely! We all have those " poor me " days and there is always something that our kiddoes do that brings us out of it. Congrats to your dd for telling you that she is a big girl and growing up! Love how you told your dd your " ears were broken. " I used that line on Josh many, many, MANY times! It really helps them to understand we all have a hard time sometimes, it helps them to know you're trying, it helps not make them feel badly that the words might be hard to understand. As Josh has gotten older and there are still times I might have a little prob putting word to context, I've changed it to " my ears are getting old! " (he can relate to that because my father, Josh's " Boompah, " just got new hearing aids and now can actually understand him!). LOL! Guest guest
gosh, i think I can almost guarantee that most people on this board has had a " poor me " day. Life seems to be a roller coaster ride most days! I had a day yesterday of " mom's ears not working " yesterday. The SLP and I just couldn't figure out what he was saying and we went through the gamut of ears not working.....our ears are tired...........ect ect until half an hour later i got what it was that he was trying to say. I'm just thankful that my son is a pretty patient guy. (most days!) I did feel a little better knowing that even the " professional " couldn't figure it out either! As to the EFA's, i've found success with putting it into yogourt. I just use a push pin to pierce it and squeeze. I found that putting it in a drink isn't that great as most of the oil sticks to the side of the glass. Alot of people use apple or pear sauce. At one time i used a teaspoon of chocolate sauce because i needed the added incentive for him to take it. not because he didn't like the taste, he's one who loves it (yuck) but because just getting him to slow down for anything is a challenge most days. this way, with the yogourt he gets a great snack to go with the supplements! hope that helps sandy mom to 9 years old ________________________________ From: <mkiser26@...> Sent: Friday, March 27, 2009 9:25:17 AM Subject: Re: [ ] A better day for my Oh, this had ME tearing up! Guest guest
I use to squeeze the pills into applesauce. Now I just squeeze them directly into her mouth. She says yuck and then its all over. I also tell her this helps her talk. Also, thought I'd share again. Another crappy day. We just left our secound evaluation at the Atlanta Speech School to see if my daughter could get in next school year for their stepping stones program. Guess what they told me, she really doesn't talk enough yet, the other kids can put 2 or 3 words together and she can't. She also doesn' t really communicate in a group setting just one on one when she is spoken to. Now my question is Isn't that what a speech school is for? to help her learn to talk? I am so upset. They told me I should apply the following year for the 3 year old program and maybe she will be ready. (She will be 4 then) I am just so upset. I can't stop the tears. Guest guest
hi there, My son is 4 next week and he has Apraxia quite severely. He has maybe 15 words, and I too am probably being generous. In some ways he has come so far from where he was 14 months ago when he started therapy, but to a degree. His real problem is retention. He has one more yr till kindergarden, and he seems to know his shapes, colors, can count to 5, is starting to identify his letters, can sequence events, but can not talk. My biggest worry is how he is going to do with the amount he has to learn in kindergarden these days. He has come so far, but can't talk in 2 word sentences yet. I know he has a long way to go with a lot of hard work. I feel pressured with kindergarden looming overhead. I started him on fish oil about 3 months ago and he started being able to mimic so much better. It is great. He uses his voice so much more. But the retention hasn't improved much. We have just started putting signs with his words, and that is helping greatly. I haven't heard of ProEFA yet. What is that? Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. Thank you!! Guest guest
ProEFA is the fish oil supplement from Nordic Naturals that has the correct ration of DHA and EPA. I bought it off the website linked to this board www.speech411.com My son is 3.5 but our school system has changed the date requirement for Kindergarten, so he still has two years instead of one (thank heavens!) I do have to ask ... when people say that the fish oils made their child speak so much better ... do you mean just making more sounds? Or actually being able to speak more clearly? My son is rather verbal (at least a lot more than even 6 months ago) but still not understandable. I just want to know what to expect. I have had my hopes dashed more than a few times over the course of this ... Thanks, ________________________________ From: " cassrob224@... Guest guest
- we used fish oils (and MB12 shots)at the same time- but it could have been the fish oil that stopped my son (3-4yrs then, he is 8now)from stuttering. Really hard to get the balance for this kid- I think in the end I figured it was best to give GLA also w/the EFAS and extra E at the same time. Some do better without much or no GLA. We used borage oil for and loved it. Don't be scared to experiment- you really won't cause harm- but when you have it right you will really see clearer speech!! Remember some kids need A LOT!! I experimented- cause you can't always follow what docs say. We had dr. neubrander, but I think I did the extras that helped!! >
Guest guest
Okay, one more quick question, I have started him on two of the ProEFA (one a.m. the second p.m.) ... how long should I see if this works? One week or longer? If I don't see any improvement, do I then give one capsule more a week until I do? And I have to say, my little guy is sooo tough. He refused applesauce, yogurnt, it on a spoon, etc. until I just told him, " We are all taking it because it is good for us (yes, we are all taking fish oil now, it is good for us!) and it will help you talk better and help US understand you better. " He now CHEWS the capsules! Gross, but so brave! Thanks again for everyone's willingness to help all ofus newbies out. THANK YOU. ________________________________ From: " lucy2max@... Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone with SprintSpeed [ ] Re: A better day for my hi there, My son is 4 next week and he has Apraxia quite severely. Thank you!! Crystal > > I just thought I'd share. Guest guest
, When I started my son on fish oil there was a noticable change in what he could say. It seemed like he could get the correct sounds out easier. The words he was working on could come out clearer. But I didn't notice change with his retention. So conversationally he didn't seem to improve. It wasn't massave, but there was enough of a change to make me happy, and make sure he gets one every night. :-) I use the 3-6-9 omaga. I believe it is the one from nordic naturals. Or actually being able to speak more clearly? My son is rather verbal (at least a lot more than even 6 months ago) but still not understandable. I just want to know what to expect. I have had my hopes dashed more than a few times over the course of this ... > Thanks,
Guest guest
Thank you again ... hmmm ... this morning when he said " i love you " it was a bit clearer ...only a week (and not necessarily ALL that got in him either, he can fight!) though I am probably being a bit gung ho about it all! ________________________________ From: " cassrob224@... Guest guest
Don't forget to log this somewhere. One day Liam will read about it and get a good laugh. Guest guest
OK you took the cake and got the prize for the funniest first words ever!!! Having two boys 12 and 14 -I highly doubt that these words will ever cause any embarrassment to him if you bring it up in the future!! I don't know how long Liam has been on the oils but they work typically in a day to three weeks almost across the board (for first surges) as long as it's the right formula. If you ever want to know if it's the fish oils or normal development...just stop them. But I warn you -check the archives -it's pretty sad, and very difficult. But that's when all of us really became believers! (and PS - about regression if you stop the oils -once you start the fish oils again... they'll surge again) =====
