My daughter goes to private s/t 5xs a week . 3 different therapists. They all

work together and compliment each other.

Hi!

My son is 3.6 and has been diagnosed with severe apraxia. Right now he

gets a mix of Kaufman and PROMPT four days a week. That will be scaled back BIG

TIME as the school year comes to an end. We weren't approved for summer

services through our local school district. During the summer, will

only be getting about an hour of private speech help a week at Columbus Speech

and Hearing.

I asked 's general Pediatricia and Developmental Pediatrician what they

recommended we do during the summer. They both highly recommended the same

local SLP through Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Here's the problem - do SLP's from different establishments work together? Is

it inappropriate for me to ask them to do that? We love our SLP at Columbus

Speech and Hearing, but I feel like the other SLP from Children's has a lot to

offer as well.

The SLP at Columbus Speech and Hearing uses both Kaufman and PROMPT. The

Children's SLP uses a small amount of PROMPT but mainly concentrates on

phonological development. Does anyone have any experience with SLP's who use

that method? I am unfamiliar with it, but this SLP has a HUGE success rate

working with apraxic children - so I am willing to possibly give it a shot after

I do some research.

Would it hurt to combine the therapies and therapists?

Thanks!

I think it is a great idea to combine therapists and then consider them to

be " your team " . I always have therapists compare notes with each other -

some have better sucess with some things and some with other things. They

just have to have your approval in writing to speak with each other about

your child.

Good luck!

Yes, therapists should work together. Even therapists with different

philosophies should be able to work together. The working together may mean

different things to different therapists and to you so I would discuss it

with all parties so you can all be on the same page before you begin.

My son receives speech daily from the SD and we private pay 2 additional hours

weekly. We had written into our IEP that the SD collaborates with our private

SLP for an hour per month to make sure everyone is on the same page. They do

have different approaches and methodologies but they compliment each other well

and it has made a huge difference in my son's progress.
