How old is your son? How did you go about registering him? How long and how much

is it? Thanks.

We have registered my son for the Kaufman Intensive Summer Language Program. I

would love to hear from anyone that their child has been through the program.

Also, would love to get details on where you stayed as we will be coming from

out of state.

Thanks,

I am totally intersted in this too!  What have they told you about the program?

It's 3 weeks right?  Is it 1:1 work every day?

My son was in the program last year and it was AWESOME. The three weeks

are really the jumpstart a lot of kids need to get their language going.

was 3.5 years old when we did it and he had severe verbal apraxia. He could put

no more than 2 words together and had fewer than probably 25 words he used

regularly. We worked really hard at camp, 3 sessions a day. 1 half hour with

& 1 half hour with another Therapist on Staff (Who were both fabulous) & 1

hour of group therapy with and her assistants (Who were also fantastic).

The first week was hard, the second week we finally got our groove and by the

3rd week we were seeing progress. Correcting errors he had always had, like

going from saying " Dye Dye to Bye Bye " . About a month after we got home his

language literally exploded and regularly talks in 5-6 word sentences. We are

working on intelligibility and those " hard sounds " like word endings K, & T. As a

matter of fact, we went back there in the fall for a follow up and his diagnosis

was listed as " Residual Apraxia " , I was so glad to see that word Severe gone

from the paper! They do a GREAT job of modeling techniques and giving you

EXACT information on how you as a parent can model the correct speech. You get

DVD's of all the sessions with , a few group ones as well. You get great

reports that you can share with your school system or your private therapist to

get the services that your child needs.

We stayed in two spots and the better, and closer of the two was definilty the

Fairfield Inn & Suites of Farmington Hills. It's 3 miles from the center, they

have Suites where there is a king size bed on one side with a TV and a pull out

couch on the other side with a TV and the wall gives you some privacy. T hey

also have microwaves and fridges in the room. The best part is that they not

only offer continental breakfast every morning, but 3 nights a week, Monday,

Tuesday & Wednesday they provide a dinner as well. The food was REALLY good too.

If you stay longer than 7 nights, you get a pretty good rate, I want to say

maybe 70 bucks a night or so. Sounds like a lot, but 3 days a week you get 2

meals a day. They also have an swimming pool.

I can't say enough good things about this program and The Kaufman Center. I

have to be truthful and tell you that it can be a long three weeks - especially

if your traveling without one parent or another and it is costly, but it's

absolutely worth every bit of it. I'm so grateful that we got to do it, and I

have no idea where would be today without it.

If you have any other questions, feel free to email me and ask!

We did a 4 day session in January. It was awesome--very tiring but worth it.

We stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Farmington Hills. It was great for food and

the indoor pool. We got connecting rooms and would put the boys in one room at

night. That worked out great because they could also sit in one room and watch

a video and we could watch something else. One room would have made for a

longer week especially when it was 2 degrees outside!! There are alot of

activities to do in that area and the people at the Kaufman center will give you

all that info--especially for the summer there are lots of outdoor parks, zoo,

etc. Good luck!

Thank you- it is great to hear this! I posted about a month back asking if the 4

day sessions were worth it, as that is what we are planning to do, but no one

responded. :( So I have been watching this thread for any info. We will be

staying in a hotel as well so it is great to know there is lots of activities to

keep my boys busy.
