HELP! Vocal stim (tic)

Hi Everyone,

My six year old son has developed a vocal stim/tic. It is kind of a cross

between throat

clearing, a cluck and a nose snort. He is very verbal but has apraxia (speech

path says he is

85% intelligible) so it is difficult to understand him. We just finished a round

of penicillin a

week ago (that is when it started) for strep. The tic comes and goes. His

titers are being

checked this week to rule out the possibility of PANDAS. Does anyone have any

idea what

could be causing this? A knowledgeable friend of mine (has son with ASD)

suggested it could

be related to seizures because the tic is combined with apraxia, and low muscle

tone ( he has

very weak upper body strength). I am hoping there is a simpler explanation.

Could it be an

allergy? My same friend suggested to try singuliar first and see if the tics

subside. Does

anyone have experience with Singuliar (good or bad). Any advice would be so

appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,

Dayna

I don't have any experience with Singulair.  My son takes Claritan, BUT, a

friend of mine just this week took her 2 year old son off of Singulair because

he was having severe nightmares at night, waking up and crying unable to be

consoled.  When she took him off the Singulair, he stopped the nightmares.  She

said she read that one of the side affects can be hallucinations????

Perhaps review with the doctor about possible side affects.  I am only passing

on what  a friend of mine said she went through this week with her son, plus he

is 2 years old and maybe for 6 year olds it may not have that impact.

Good luck,

My 9 year old son with PPD-NOS, PANDAS and Apraxia also develop a vocal tic

after a strep infection. His titer was extremely high. That is when we found

out he had PANDAS. He is has been taking penicillin for over a year so he would

not have another strep infection. He has a titer every 3 months to see what his

levels are at the time. It took over a year for his vocal tic to almost

disappear.
