Guest guest
You should have his clotting factors tested. My son is on fish oil and a pretty high dose of vitamin E (thanks to ). It's done wonders for us. I told his DAN! doctor about it and we had his clotting tested to make sure it was not having a negative effect. His clotting was fine. There might be something else causing this. > > I just wanted to let you all know since some of you are proponents of using fish oil (and I was too) that it can cause bleeding time to be longer. It says it in most of the literature you read. I have a six year old son with Apraxia and I was using Nordic naturals complete omega 369 liquid. 1/2 teaspoon in applesauce at lunch and the same at dinner. He cut the tips of his fingers last week in three places and I noticed it took a really long time to clot. Then in school he pulled off the bandaid and reopened one of the cuts. The nurse said it also took a really long time to clot. I remember once two years ago I took him to the doctor and they pricked his finger to take blood to test the iron, and at that time too it took a long time to clot. I called my pediatrician who is a homeopathic Dr. And knows ALOT about supplements. He told me to take my son off the fish oil immediately and gave me the name of a hemotologist. I'm just letting you all know that there is a possibility that this can happen. > >
Guest guest
Fish oil is a natural blood thinner. That is why it takes a little longer for the clotting and it makes it seem like they are bleeding more. I know many peole who have been told to start fish oil just for that reason (especially older people.) I'm interested to know what the Dr. says...I hope he is able to continue on the fish oil. Guest guest
is correct in that fish oil is a 'natural' blood thinner- in that way it doesn't work like man made aspirin. Like me has been part of this group for close to a decade ( were you here for 8 or 10 years now?) and through the years it is RARE for anyone to notice what you are seeing Dina. In addition most of this group is made up of parents of boys -and as we know they are not the ones to go through life delicately in most cases. The dosage you are using, around 2 capsules a day -is about double the dosage of what the FDA approved for infant formula -so very conservative. Many of us have our children on higher dosages and still don't see what you are seeing. The advice you were given was the best in that fish oil or not you need to get your child tested by a hemotologist -soon. I was never on fish oil as a child but was tested many times for bleeding issues because I was the one that would not stop bleeding -bruise super easily etc. I was put on vitamin K and diagnosed with anemia and I remember forced to eat liver (!!) This continued through to my adult years -not the liver part but the easy to bruise / bleeding part. The bruises I'd get were horrific -and the worst part is I never knew were they were from! In fact many were afraid when I was pregnant -especially my doctor friends and I again went for many tests which were all negative. Interestingly enough -and this is documented -I take around 4-5 capsules of fish oils daily now for years, at least 5 years, and bleeding nor bruising is no longer an issue -strange but true. Here's more on fish oil and bleeding from Stoll MD of Harvard Medical School who wrote the book The Omega 3 Connection " The heart-protecting ability of the EPA to reduce the stickiness of platelets and decrease the formation of blood clots is one of the EPA's most important health benefits. However, this ability to reduce the formation of potentially fatal clots within blood vessels has often been misunderstood and has raised concerns that omega-3 fatty acids could cause bleeding to occur in the body. This concern presumably arises because aspirin, which also decreases platelet aggregation and blood clotting, is known to cause occasional abnormal bleeding. In fact, no cases of bleeding from EPA or omega-3s have ever been documented. Supporting the safety of the omega -3 fatty acids is a study where participants receiving a high dosage of omega-3 fatty acids underwent either angioplasty or unsuccessful angioplasty followed by coronary arty bypass surgery. These cardiac procedures and surgery may cause substantial blood loss, yet the patients receiving omega -3 fatty acids suffered no excessive bleeding. Understanding the difference between aspirin and EPA at the level of the platelet illustrates the beauty of nature's balance of the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and why EPA is unlikely to lead to abnormal bleeding. Aspirin causes a nearly complete and permanent block of the platelets' ability to aggregate and form clots. The action of aspirin lasts for the life of the platelet, and because it is so complete, aspirin can cause abnormal bleeding. This is why aspirin should not be taken before surgery or in pregnancy unless specifically prescribed. EPA on the other hand causes only partial and time- limited reduction in platelet's ability to form clots. Recent research has shown that even a 17 gram dose of EPA (omega 3) produces a reversible inhibition of the platelet aggregation of between 40 and 60 percent. Compare this partial action of the huge dosage of EPA to the 99.9 percent irreversible inhibition of platelet function by a quarter tablet of aspirin. Aspirin causes and all-or-none action, which can cause problems in susceptible people. In contrast, EPA and it's eicosanoid derivatives promote a state of health by preserving the normal ability of the boy to stop bleeding, while competing with and limiting the ability of the arachidonic acid (omega-6-derived eicosanoid) to cause abnormal clotting within blood within blood vessels. Guest guest
Hi - I spoke with the hemotologist on the phone. He said that fish oil in large doses combined with aspirin may cause a long blood clotting time. I don't give my son aspirin and as you said not that much fish oil. They want me to take him off as a precaution. My son is also missing part of the Elastin gene and this may be another factor I have to look into. Also the fact that it was on the tips of the fingers, which may tend to bleed more. I need to do some research - get him tested - and then hopefully may be able to restart the fish oil. -- [ ] Re: Fish Oil and Bleeding is correct in that fish oil is a 'natural' blood thinner- in that way it doesn't work like man made aspirin.
