Guest guest
Becky you have my prayers. I want to see what else we can do to help you. Where are you located? It's possible we can find an agency to help you and your family right now. Off the top I'm thinking if you (or I?) call your local Easter Seals perhaps they can help with the food situation -help organize those that can offer help in your community? Here's just one online organization for support http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/ also I found at Amazon a number of cookbooks -I'm not sure which is best and don't know if you do either yet but I'm sure if you ask in one of the chat rooms at the site above or one like it you'll get answers. And I just know you will have the strength and ability to know what needs to be done- Asa's in good hands now in the hospital and he'll be in good hands when he comes back you your loving home. I do pray he'll be home with you for Christmas as well! Best, =====

Guest guest
Of course, Asa and your entire family are in my prayers. I know that it's probably very hard for you to keep it together right now, but I do have to agree that God was holding his hand. A terrifying situation, but he (and you) will come thru it just fine. Practice random acts of kindness... We're needing prayers for Asa-- our 4 1/2 yr old I took him into the ER yesterday (Saturday) with a suspicion that his blood sugars were high. He was showing all the typical signs for diabetes, and I had been watching him carefully all week to see if it was that or the after-effects of a cold/virus. When we got to the ER, they ran a quick check and the machine registerd " High " which meant that the levels were OVER 600 at that time. (normal levels shouldn't exceed 120 or so ideally) They took bloods, got him going on an IV and later started the insulin. He was seriously dehydrated, since the body was basically starting to eat away at his fat-- he had lost a good amount of weight extremely quickly-- etc The tests showed his levels to be at 1002 !! We were extremely blessed that he hadn't gone into a diabetic coma and that he was not passed out. They admitted him right away-- pushed the insulin all night, and throughout the day we've been trying to adjust the levels so they are acceptable-- which is a range of 80-150 for him right now. At one point he " bottomed out " at 35, and we had to increase sugars and get him eating more. I'm home for a couple of hours-hopefully to get some sleep, while Tom is at the hospital overnight. When I left, his levels were still dangerously high at 420, but he's doing quite well for how he was yesterday, and they are being diligent in getting the levels balanced out. tomorrow, Arielle and I will have to go back to the hospital so Arielle and Tom can start their " education " on how to check the blood and how to administer the insulin, and to basically become knowledgeable about all that's going on so there's someone other than myself who's able to care for his needs. Please pray for us-- Asa's alert, but still not himself. He's been having very rough time of it, and they haven't been allowing him any " in between " foods, which for a 4 yr old " grazer " has been extremely difficult. Trying to keep him occupied has been a challenge to say the least. They're telling us that they HOPE to have him home on Wednesday-- which would really be a blessing to us since that's Christmas Eve and when we would normally celebrate the holiday. I know our family would really love to be together and knowing peace etc--- Here are our areas that we need for prayers-- ~For Asa's levels to balance out and maintain the acceptable range ~For Tom, Arielle, and myself to become 100% confident in all that we have to do to take care of him once he's back home ~For the other children here at home-- this is our greatest challenge right now as we need someone OTHER than Dad and Arielle to be here, so they can be at the hospital as much as possible to get their training done. ~For us to be able to figure out a food situation-- as there's no food in the house and no one available to go shopping or cook etc. ~For Asa primarily-- to have peace and comfort in this time. He's a tough cookie, without a doubt, but is really off kilter-- please pray for the least amount of pain for his shots, and blood checks etc. ~ For us to be able to quickly find food substitutes that do NOT have harmful chemicals in them (as in most suger-free foods) due to Asa's neurologically based motor planning disorder/disability -- they are toxic to him. And overall for PEACE. Mom's exhausted to say the least, but otherwise hanging in there. More worried about the kids and the logistics of their eating, and not having any local family to help out, etc. It's all a little daunting. A quick praise in all of this-- with Asa's levels so extremely high on the onset, we were VERY BLESSED that he hadn't gone into a diabetic coma. We've been constantly seeing God's hand in all of the timing for the Dr's and specialists at the hospital, and this is all good. GOD is good! thanks for praying! Guest guest
Becky & Tom, St. Gerard, who, like the Savior, loved children so tenderly and by your prayers freed many from disease and even death, listen to us who are pleading for our sick child. We thank God for the great gift of our son (daughter) and ask him to restore our child to health if such be his holy will. This favor, we beg of you through your love for all children and mothers. Amen. While recovering from breast cancer, I visited a holistic doctor who cleansed my body from many toxins. The below websites assisted me in my lifestyle change by making better choices. Take baby steps . . . and you will get there. http://www.whfoods.com/ www.eatingwell.com Peace, Joanne

Guest guest
Dear Becky and Tom- You are not alone. Steve and I were at the exact same place you are on October 30, 2007. Josh had been having accidents at night and became ill quite suddenly. When we got to the hospital his blood sugar was 1,365. That is the correct number. We stayed overnight and got to go home the next day. That was a year ago. Josh has gained a lot of weight since then. He has a RN at school who carefully monitors his blood sugars. He get insulin everytime he eats. He takes 1 unit of novulog for every 25 grams of carbohydrates he eats, he also gets 12 units of lantus everday at 9am. He has done amazingly well. We also use an insulin pen instead of syringes and we carry a fannypack with his glucometer in it. Please call me anytime you like. I am always here for you 5152212971. I can call you after 7pm and on the weekends for free so it would not cost you anything if I call you back. PLEASE Call the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We have monthly meetings and they are amazingly resourceful. It is very helpful to get on a waiver. I live in Iowa and there is no waiting list here for the ill and handicapped waiver. It will pay for the medical expenses that your insurance will not cover. Your endocrinologist can be very helpful. Do not be afraid to ask for help. They have given us supplies when we needed them. We use a glucometer that uses the smallest amount of blood. You can usually get a glucometer for free because they make the money off the test strips. Ours is the first touch elite. There is also a lancet device called a pelikan sun. I haven't tried it yet but have heard it is quite easy on the fingers. I have been in this group for several years now. I am also a nurse. I am here for you anytime day or night. I do volunteer work for JDRF. IT IS A WONDERFUL GROUP TO GET INVOLVED WITH. Trust me. Tyler is the President of the group. She was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes 30 years ago. Thank you for posting. Juvenile diabetes is on the rise for sure. You will get through this fine. Your child can do everything he did before in moderation. Blood sugar levels drop with exercise. Keep a journal. I wish I had went to the doctar sooner than I did but we got there in time. We still drink soda but now we buy diet soda. Josh brings his lunch to school and I label the containers with the carbohydrate counts. All fast food places have nutritional information with the carbohydrates listed. Charlotte and Steve Henry5155548002 0r 5152212971,SteHn4@.... Guest guest
Hi - It's Charlotte- I referred her to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Remember last year when Josh had a blood sugar of 1,365. I know you remember. He is doing good now. We give him insulin everytime he eats and check his blood sugar 4 times a day. I do volunteer work for JDRF. They were a real godsend to us. She can call me anytime of day or night. I will do whatever I can to help. I couldn't sleep either. It is exhausting to say the least. JDRF has monthly meetings here. Hy Vee grocery store and Pella windows are 2 of our biggest supporters. I have a tendency to favor the businesses that contribute to our organization. We have a big race for the cure walk and it is lots of fun for the kids. Last Christmas JDRF even gave us tickets for the Rocketts at Christmas. I was afraid to leave Josh with anyone for along time. Having an RN at school to watch after him has been a real blessing. Tyler is the President of JDRF and she was recently on Oprah. She was diagnosed 30 years ago when she was already an adult.Josh eats the same food he always ate but we buy diet root beer now. I hope you have a great Christmas. I graduated from Marshalltown Community College this month and I will go to Upper Iowa University January 5 for my Bachelors in special education. I do not know where Tom and Becky are from but JDRF is all over the US. I hope this helps. I am always here if I can help at all.
