Hear from parent leaders who have run successfully. Find out what to expect once you are on the board and also strategies for dealing with your school board- even if you are not a member. Getting to Know Your Legislators Hear directly how you can work with them to effect the policies needed to improve the lives of children and families in our state and nation. Starting and Running Education Advisory/ Advocacy Groups I & II Federal and state education laws require that parents have a voice in improving education. This workshop is for parent leaders who are involved with NCLB/Title I advisory councils, school leadership councils, bilingual education advisory councils, special education parent advisory groups or other education advocacy groups. Public Policy Advocacy I & II This 2-part workshop provides parent leaders with information and strategies you need to effectively engage in making a difference by changing the systems that impact children and families. Whether your concerns focus on general or special education,health care or mental health, child welfare or juvenile justice,these sessions will help you communicate effectively with legislators and policymakers and learn to use the media and grassroots mobilization to move your agenda. Diversity and Parent Leadership Change is here. Our communities, schools and state are increasingly diverse in language, race, geographic origin, ethnicity, gender, cultural practices, etc. This session will help groups engage the strength of diversity to build and sustain their organization. Learn to become a culturally responsive organization and how to advocate for systems to do the same. Making an Impact: Representing the Family Voice on Committees and Advisory Councils Voices for families are important to the decision-making processes in every system that serves children. Don't be intimidated when you are the only parent/family member on a committee or council. Parent leaders who have been successful in effecting change by serving on various committees and councils at the local, state and federal levels will share their experiences and strategies. Special Education Self-Assessment and Monitoring: The Role of Parents/Caregivers Improving special education and outcomes for children is the focus of New Jersey's special education and monitoring process. Come and learn about the process and the important role that informed parents must play in utilizing the self-assessment to effect change in their district. The Media and Your Message This session will feature a panel of writers and reporters for local and state media who will share how you can get the word out about your activities and issues. Learn how the Internet is helping and hindering your access to the various audiences that you must reach to promote your message. Effective Communication & Collaboration when Supporting Families This interactive presentation will demonstrate effective strategies to enhance parent/professional collaboration. Participants will learn how to assist parents in confidently communicating their child's strengths and needs to professionals, agencies and service providers. Information on key behaviors that facilitate good communication skills will be shared.
