Guest guest
Hi Carol I'm sure others will have lots of suggestions. I have a SN child in the school system now so that's what I base some of my suggestions on however she is not Apraxic. I'm assuming from what you've described your daughter, has very limited language? Our wonderful school system isnt the best at providing the Least restrictive yet supportive environment, or should I say " identifying " it much of the time unless you have a really fantastic teacher. Your daughter deserves and by law (her right ) is entitled to be in the least restrictive environment where she can learn with same age peers. However, sometimes the least restrictive environment (LRE) actually happens to be a classroom of children with challenges (different schools may group differently). The thing you have to watch for here is that many of these classrooms are teaching children who are " learning disabled " and Apraxic childen (while some may) arent generally learning disabled.. they have expressive languge issues. So this type of classroom (again depending on school and make-up of class) would not necessarily be conducive to a LRE. Your dd, it sounds to me, has not been getting enough ST (altho a fair newbie to Apraxia - a fairly new dx for my 2 year old) BUT my thinking is that ST needs to be boosted significantly along with poss. OT if she's got sensory issues. You didnt mention resource room? My daughter, who is in first grade, doesnt get the best ST unfortunately BUT it's often made up in Resource with some really incredible staffers, 1:1 attention both in classroom and outside, that reinforces what's happening in ST/and in the class. She has approx 3 hours weekly of Resource time and it's great! And if the LRE for your dd is in the classroom then she may need an aide: someone who can help her with the social connections, prompts for communication (if that works right now etc). If you have any kind of support entity for you in your community for IEP's /special needs kids... and esp those who might help you find an advocate you might want to pursue. I think we all could use a good advocate sometimes.. to see the forest thru the trees. But given your school system's less than helpful nature thusfar, sounds like they need some big guns thrown at them and an advocate could really help with that.. Wishing you the very best!
