Guest guest
i personally knew a woman who had a homebirth and declined vit k for her baby. unfortunately he hemorraghed as a result within 2 weeks. it was a scary time obviously. i'm not saying give your baby vit k- just do the research and make sure you're comfortable with what you decide. i did give my babies vit k but then i felt it was probably prudent because of the length of my labors. however, the only one out of 4 that received eye drops was my hospital born baby. that was ignorance on my behalf good luck making your decision. it's good to question routine procedures. mandi -- Re: Where is the discussion/questions on If your newborn is breastfeeding and breastfeeding well there is no need for Vit K for sure. I forget the exact med reason for giving it but it is provided in breastmilk in good quantity. A quick web search will probably give reason why but don't buy into having to do it. Eye ointment which used to be silver nitrate (make sure they are NOT using that) is to guard against eye infections. Also not necessary unless IMO there's real worry of infection (dirty conditions, etc.) I often wonder how the human race survived before all the birth intervention stuff. ;-] Sally shoebootie@... wrote: > Yes. Guest guest
My first son had it. I was young and trusting of the doctors, it is a vitamin, right? It didn't sound bad to give him a good ol' dose of a healthy vitamin. He was very jaundice after that. My second son was a homebirth and the midwife didn't believe in the vitamin K shot, yet she carried the oral with her just in case a child had bleeding issues at birth. She used it on a case by case basis and told me that she ended up rarely using it. My understanding is that it isn't really about clotting factors for circumcising (yet, why in the world would you want to give your child a shot of something that has potential side effects so that you can amputate part of his penis???) but it is to try to prevent a VERY rare blood condition. I can't remember what it was, it is very early in the morning and I was up all night studying, but the amount of babies who actually have it are extremely low. Guest guest
Vitamin K shot as I found out (someone please correct me if I am wrong) is what the cause of some cancers are because the shot has a high amount of things like ethyl alcohol and other harmful chemical preservatives. Vit K is an essential nutrient that the best thing to do is for the mother to take it orally and let it pass thru the breast milk to the baby. www.mercola com has alo of info on this and is a good place to start. As far as the circumcision is concerned the best thing to do if you decide to do one is to have a Jewish guy do it at 7 days after birth. They do it quickly as opposed to the inhumane hospital way. You do not have to be Jewish to have them do it I am pretty sure. I think they are called moyels (not sure of the spelling) Anyway contact a Jewish synagogue. I am not trying to start a debate either way so please try not to let that get started. Rena >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Message: 1 Date: Tue, 18 Oct 2005 07:43:34 EDT From: Algaveda@... Subject: Re: Re: more vit K qts so can SOMEONE PLEASE clarify something for me- is it the actual Vit K injection OR simply the large amounts of Vit K supplement (regardless of how it is administered )that we give, the cause of increased rates of some childhood cancers? What risk does the injection present over the oral Vitamin K? If you have a baby circumsized with NO Vit K are they at increased risk for bleeding or should they be fine? Has anyone done this? Guest guest
You can get the drops at www.birthwithlove.com. They have a link for " vitamin K " on their homepage. Guest guest
It's my understanding that infants have a natural peak of Vitamin K around the 8th day, hence the command for Jews to wait until the 8th day to circumcise. Since I am a lay midwife and do homebirths, many of the families who choose circumcision wait until the 8th day to have it performed, either in a traditional Jewish service or a family practitioner will do it in his office. We have found many who will meet us at their office on a Saturday morning to " do the deed " .

Guest guest
Vit K is a precursor for folic acid and a catalyst for many important chemical reactions and interchanges. Supplementation of K2 is still being explore and is sort of the 'it' topic as of late especially for people with problems with oxalates. IMO if you eat enough leafy greens (one of the best sources of K) you should be ok. Putting Kale or collards in your bone broth is a great way to get easily absorbable vit K
Guest guest
> > I read several article on the Weston A Price site regarding taking Vit K with the cod liver oil. If you believe what the article says, we all should be taking vit K with the oil for absorption. What do you guys think? Vit K2 for bone absorption. > > I would hate to be taking the expensive Blue Ice Cod Liver Oil and have it not be doing anything. ==>You get plenty of Vitamin K from this diet, plus the fact that your large colon makes it from other foods. Guest guest
Did you receive Vitamin K in pill form or by injection? I didn't realize you'd had a variceal bleed.
