Special Guest Panel SHINING LIGHT ON THE SPECTRUM In recognition of " April as Autism Awareness Month " West Bergen Mental Healthcare and Bergen Community College are hosting a Free Awareness Event on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2009, 7 - 9 P.M. Moses Family Meeting & Training Center, Technology Education Center, Tech 128 Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ. Parking Lot B Shining Light on the Spectrum: Increasing Awareness of the Five Pervasive Developmental Disorders will present to the audience an overview of the 5 Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs) with special emphases on Asperger's and Autistic Disorder. Learn more about the various symptoms and associated features found in Asperger's and Autism from Dr. Jeanne Marron, Clinical Director of Asperger's Related Services at West Bergen. Gain a glimpse of what it is like to have significant social challenges as Riley and Lawson moderate a panel of adolescents and adults who will share their first hand experiences of difficulties and triumphs. Time will be set aside for questions from the audience. If you are already familiar with the PDDs or have first hand experience, then bring a family member, friend, colleague, coach, educator, employer, neighbor or someone who may cross the path of individuals on the spectrum and benefit from this FREE presentation. Directions to the college: From the North (Via Garden State Parkway)-Take Exit 165, turn right (west) on Ridgewood Road, then right onto Ridgewood Avenue (crossing over Route 17) and continue to Paramus Road. Turn left onto Paramus Road and continue approximately 2 miles to college, proceed around jug handle to main entrance. (Via Route 17)-Turn right off Route 17 onto Ridgewood Avenue (west) to Paramus Road. Turn left onto Paramus Road and continue as above. From the East Take Route 4 (via Washington Bridge from New York City) to Paramus Road, Paramus. (From the east, Paramus Road is approximately 3/4 miles past Route 17 intersection). Turn right onto Paramus Road and proceed north for approximately 2 miles to College entrance on right side of Paramus Road. From the South (Via Garden State Parkway)-Take Exit 160 (Passaic Street). Turn left onto Passaic Street. Continue over Route 4 onto Paramus Road (Passaic Street becomes Paramus Road north of Route 4 overpass). Continue north about 2 miles on Paramus Road to college entrance on right. (Via Route 17)-Take Century Road, second exit to the right, proceed around clover leaf over Route 17 onto Century Road (west). Continue to Paramus Road and turn right onto Paramus Road to college entrance on right. From the West Take Route 4 to Paramus Road, Paramus (exit under overpass). Turn right onto Paramus Road and proceed north for approximately 2 miles to college entrance on right side of Paramus Road. ASPERGER'S RELATED SERVICES DEPARTMENT WORKSHOP SERIES for Professionals, Family Members and Students WINTER/SPRING 2009 2 workshops left in the series: 5. Planning a Playdate for Children with Special Needs This workshop focuses on helping the parent to plan and structure play dates for their elementary aged child. Techniques and strategies designed to optimize successful social interaction while in your home or the community will be presented. Date: Monday April 20, 2009 Presenter: Kandravy, LSW Jane , LSW Time: 10:00-11:30 a.m. Location: *Ramsey Cost: $25.00 Target audience: parents of elementary school aged children 6. Evaluation and Treatment of Adults with Asperger's and Similar Disorders This workshop focuses on assessing the adult with Asperger's Syndrome and optimizing psychosocial interventions to address the varied additional needs of this population, their family members, and those that play a significant role in their development and welfare. An understanding of specific techniques and tools, as well as the importance of considering the impact of the increased social complexity and social demands in adulthood will be presented.
