Guest guest
How can I know about the schedule of speech of my daughter? Iam allowed to see her in school, and following her schedule with the missing dates with the teacher? my daughter is a pre-schoolr kid her IEP says 1-1 therapy , but when she returns back from the school, she tries to explain me 2 boys, 1 girl, one more girl, we are 4 speech. and I know because all the kids she spoke about I know they have IEP. How canĀ I ask them for the right services they wrote on the IEP, Also I have the right to be informed for the missing classes of speech by the teacher of the class, or the speech teacher? My IEP after 10 days , and the school should improve the services, not do it less. Caroline writing from LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
Guest guest
Can you call the therapist or drop by before or after school? I would tell her that your daughter told her that there were other kids in speech and you want to make sure she is getting one-on-one therapy instead of group therapy. Maybe you can have your daughter draw a picture of what her speech room looks like and all the people in there when she goes to speech. Guest guest
Ok, this is a good soultion, but Iam allowed to enter the speech time in anytime in the school if I took the schedule, also my question issomeone said to me I have to take an appointment before, so in this case she will arrange herself with the teacher of the class again, as she took speech 8:30, 10:00 oclock , and school time is starting from 8:30am to 11:30am. Also I have the right to ask who are in the speech and the names by the law or not???? Thank you for your help before my IEP, CAROLINE writing from LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA ________________________________ From: Amy Bowen <aeimmie@...> Sent: Friday, April 24, 2009 1:04:44 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Feeling something not right at the school Can you call the therapist or drop by before or after school? Guest guest
this was four years ago...but my daughters special needs preschool had an open door policy needed!! I did not need an appt to come visit or sit in on any one of her school therapies! I could show up at the door- view the classroom- which had one-way mirrors and I had the schedule for her weekly therapies- so I could visit whenever I wanted!!! As far as other kids- you cannot and the school will not give you information about or discuss other peoples children who may be in her groups--these are based on HIPA laws!!I would not want them discussing mine with any other parents either. > > > > > > > How can I know about the schedule of speech of my daughter? > > Iam allowed to see her in school, and following her schedule with the > > missing dates with the teacher? > > my daughter is a pre-schoolr kid her IEP says 1-1 therapy , but when she > > returns back from the school, she tries to explain me 2 boys, 1 girl, one > > more girl, we are 4 speech. > > > > and I know because all the kids she spoke about I know they have IEP. > > How can I ask them for the right services they wrote on the IEP, > > Also I have the right to be informed for the missing classes of speech by > > the teacher of the class, or the speech teacher? > > > > My IEP after 10 days , and the school should improve the services, not do > > it less. > > > > Caroline writing from LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA > > > >
Guest guest
Have you checked out the 's Law books or website? There is tons of information over there about your rights, your child's rights and how the schools " should " be following the law. To clear things up for me, since my son is non-verbal and can't tell me about his day, I ask that the teacher and therapist fill in a daily log/form to include exactly what was done in therapy. The info they send is okay, I really want more to know exactly how Ronan worked on his goals, how much time was truly " on " for both he and the therapist among other of my need-to-know info. Things may be different in your district (I hope since I'm not happy where we are in NC), but I heard from a parent last year that the '30 minutes' of speech can be 30 minutes of prep time for the next session, filling out the paperwork for the previous session, or 30 minutes of time spent on your child's goals even without actually working WITH the child. My advice, ask for a log to be filled out and make it so that the therapist can feel like she/he is king of the speech mountain and you NEED them to help you. Keep the log simple since it will be another thing to do (check boxes to state where they worked with your child, how long was the child on-task vs. how much time the session was, a quick summary of what method is being used or what activities they did in case you can carry over that game or skill at home, and who else might have been at the session. Make it short and sweet, but oh so grateful that you have this information. I hope you get the answers.
Guest guest
Caroline, I think it's in your right to ask if she's getting speech individually or in a small group, but I do not think they will give you the names of the children in the small group, that would violate privacy laws. It's difficult knowing when/if our kids are actually getting the therapy they are supposed to get per their IEP b/c our kids usually can't tell us. If your relationship w/ your teachre is a good one they will typically tell you when/if the therapy is happening. You shouldn't have to " make an appt " to visit your child's school, now maybe the SLP, b/c she's probably has a large caseload and is very busy, but just to pop in your child's class, no appt should be needed. Good luck. Bonnie
Guest guest
I would talk with your child's therapist. I wouldn't have had a problem with a parent sitting in an individual therapy session at all. Group therapy would be a different story. I think you have a right to ask how many kids are in your child's session and how therapy is done, but the names and goals of any children in a group should not be shared. I wouldn't just drop by if you want to observe a session. I would talk to the therapist and set up a time. In my experience with preschools the kids are not always seen at the same time everyday. For example child A may be first one day and child C may be first another day. It usually depended on what the children were doing and who was the least interrupted in their activities.
