Guest guest
I forgot to mention that he has had his hearing checked and he hears just fine! > > My 2 1/2 year old has the loudest voice I've ever heard come from a child. Guest guest
> Is this related to apraxia or do I just have a loud mouthed kid? Christy, Our oldest has Apraxia and is very loud spoken. Although, I have heard about soft spoken children with Apraxia. *************************************************************************** * TTFN, Angi * apraxia@... * Web & Graphic Designer * * Wife to Tim * WAHM to Trysten & Devlyn * Aunt to ie * * www.timandangi.com * www.designsbyangi.com * www.tristarcreations.com * ***************************************************************************
Guest guest
Christy, You may have already done this, but get his ears checked! My son constantly has " negative pressure " (which feels like being in an airplane during take off/landing according to the experts!). I have him checked by the audiologist that I work with frequently throughout the school year. He's got " severe negative pressure " right now. He's been cranking up the volume on everything and speakly loudly. We've got an appt w/ the ENT next week. Anyone, check his ears! Good luck, Bonnie >
Guest guest
Hi Christy: I haven't read through the messages regarding speaking loud...Does your son have auditory sensory problems? Sensory Integration Dysfunction? Has your son been evaluated by an Occupational Therapist? Hearing checked? Here is some information on Sensory Integration Dysfunction...lots of good info. My son had hypersensitivity to sounds...check out the list below and see if this could be a possible problem for your son. HTH, Tina mom to Landon http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/index.html Sensory Processing Disorder Checklist Signs Of Auditory Dysfunction: (no diagnosed hearing problem) 1. Hypersensitivity To Sounds (Auditory Defensiveness): __ distracted by sounds not normally noticed by others; i.e., humming of lights or refrigerators, fans, heaters, or clocks ticking __ fearful of the sound of a flushing toilet (especially in public bathrooms), vacuum, hairdryer, squeaky shoes, or a dog barking __ started with or distracted by loud or unexpected sounds __ bothered/distracted by background environmental sounds; i.e., lawn mowing or outside construction __ frequently asks people to be quiet; i.e., stop making noise, talking, or singing __ runs away, cries, and/or covers ears with loud or unexpected sounds __ may refuse to go to movie theaters, parades, skating rinks, musical concerts etc. __ may decide whether they like certain people by the sound of their voice 2. Hyposensitivity To Sounds (Under-Registers): __ often does not respond to verbal cues or to name being called __ appears to " make noise for noise's sake " __ loves excessively loud music or TV __ seems to have difficulty understanding or remembering what was said __ appears oblivious to certain sounds __ appears confused about where a sound is coming from __ talks self through a task, often out loud __ had little or no vocalizing or babbling as an infant __ needs directions repeated often, or will say, " What? " frequently > > My 2 1/2 year old has the loudest voice I've ever heard come from a child. He doesn't say words but he " says " a lot and makes a lot of noise. Guest guest
Thank you for posting that list! It doesn't really seem like he fits any of that criteria though. When he was evaluated by First Steps they told me they didn't think he had any significant sensory issues going on. I however feel that there must be an auditory processing issue. I've been looking into The Listening Program and am really interested in it, just afraid of the cost. Christy > > > > My 2 1/2 year old has the loudest voice I've ever heard come from a child. Guest guest
http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/voice/auditory.asp Symptoms of auditory processing and other info. Have you had him evaluated by an audiologist to check hearing? If Fisrst Steps didn't provide an Occupational therapist evaluation, you should also get that done to check for Sensory, fine-gross motor delays, etc. I also believe Occupational therapist can do the listening programs. A speech patholigist will also be familiar with auditory processing. There are tests that can be done, but I don't think they are for 2 1/2 year olds-check with your Speech patholigist. My older non-apraxic son talks loud...he can control it now, but I use to have to tell him to use his inside voice all the time. When he was a younger, he mostly talked loud when he was excited to tell someone something. We would practice whispering in the house. Landon at that age screeched a lot mostly out of frustration. Thankfully that stopped when we started fish oil and he gained speech. He was also over stimulated with sounds so I am sure that was rough on him also. Good luck to you, Tina mom to Landon > > Thank you for posting that list! It doesn't really seem like he fits any of that criteria though.
