My 5 yr 10 mo ds just finished his AAC Assessment at our local University (five

2 hour sessions each). He has been in speech therapy for 3 years and 4 months

(this includes the Beckman Oral Motor Protocol at Beckman and Associates). He

has been in OT for almost that long. He has come a long way yet he is still not

understandable to others beyond a few words in context of a specific activity or

topic.

We're going to do a two week trial with a Tango. My son seemed to like it best

during the AAC clinic. From there...

The Insurance Battle! LOL! It's considered " Durable medical equipment " and

should be covered but we all know how HMOs work!

I do not envision my child will need an AAC for the rest of his life but I can

see it helping him express himself better now. PECS worked for us when he was

younger but he has outgrown it. It seems better suited to requesting rather

than conversing.

We still take Nordic Naturals Complete Omega 369 but only for improved

nutitional status. I'm not sure if my son gained anything from the SPEAK trial.

We had been working on the " y " sound before he started it and he mastered the

sound while on it so it may be coincidental. He was not harmed by it.

He has only 6 fingers so sign language isn't a good fit for him.

Sincerely,

Debra, homeschooling mom of 4 ages 12, 11, 9, and 5
