Any preventative measure is good for a child if maintained properly.  Yes, you

should check any chemical that is placed in your body before use anyway, but do

we do that?  If the sealants are placed correctly on teeth that do not have

decay and remain then decay can not form under the sealant.  Now, if you eat

hard candy, chew ice or other hard items you do run the risk of breaking the

sealant.  If your daily intake of sugar is high; fruit juice, candy, cakes

or fruit, and are not brushing 2x a day and flossing  decay will set in.  I

have had sealants on my teeth since 1989 and I do not have any cavitites.

There are some real concerns about sealants because of the very nasty

chemicals used to make some of the sealant resins -- you should, at a

minimum very carefully research the exact product your dentist

intends to use. Also, there are many reports of decay developing

under sealants and going unnoticed because of the sealant, causing

more damage than would likely have occurred if the tooth was unsealed

and the cavity could be detected earlier. I would approach

cautiously..

not do it. (Some dentists do for adults.)

taffy, Now or Laters, etc...once you have them as insurance only

covers them one time! Taffys and hard candies can pull the sealants

off.
