Reducing Behavior Problems in the Elementary School Classroom

Speaker Epstein from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln led the

research panel that investigated which approaches have the most rigorous

evidence related to Reducing Behavior Problems in the Elementary School

Classroom. He will describe how he conducted the review and decided which

recommendations to include in Reducing Behavior Problems in the Elementary

School Classroom, a Practice Guide recently published by the Institute of

Education Sciences, which is part of the US Department of Education.

President Obama's Education Plan Aims to Close the Achievement Gap in U.S.

President Barack Obama outlined his plans for education reform in a speech

to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on March 10th. The major themes of

his speech were closing the educational achievement gap for minority groups

and preparing all students for success in the global economy of the 21st

" High Expectations, Endless Possibilities " was the theme that brought

together hundreds of Parent Center staff, Office of Special Education

Programs (OSEP) representatives, and national disability organizations at

the annual OSEP National Parent Center Conference in Washington, D.C., in

January. Attendees were motivated and enlightened by speakers such as Sharon

, Beth Harry, Janice Fialka, and Kemp. Handouts and

Parent Training Modules Help Families Promote Children's Social And

Emotional Skills

The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning has

developed parent training modules that help families promote children's

social and emotional skills, understand children's problem behaviors, and

use positive approaches to help learn appropriate behaviors. Click here for

NAMI Releases Guide to Crisis Intervention Programs for Youth

NAMI has published a guide titled, Supporting Schools and Communities in

Breaking the Prison Pipeline: A Guide to Emerging and Promising Crisis

Intervention Programs for Youth, to help inform advocates about existing

crisis intervention programs for youth and what they can do to promote and

implement such programs in their states and communities.

Announcing a new Web page on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of

2009 (ARRA) from NECTAC. These include links to the law and the official

federal site, as well as guidance from the U.S. Department of Education. We

also link to summaries of the early childhood provisions in the law and

analyses and/or recommendations from various organizations on the use of

Publication Explores Avoiding Financial Hardship

The Catalyst Center's latest publication, Breaking the Link Between Special

Health Care Needs and Financial Hardship (PDF), describes the three distinct

" links " between children with special health care needs and family financial

hardship. It provides policymakers and advocates with examples of proven

strategies and policy solutions that can reduce the impact of these links

and even help to completely break them.
