We have used a Dynavox for our son over the past 2 1/2 years. We started out

with a DV4 and have upgraded to the Vmax. It has been wonderful for him. He

also has used it more at school than at home - although I will say this - you

can do some pretty cool stuff with the V. This includes interactive pages - ex:

we do photo pages. This means we can create pages with sounds and other neat

features of things we have done or things he really likes. This makes

vocabulary building more interesting for him. He will sit with his device when

I add new pages and just explore and mimic the new words. It is a really

wonderful thing to have. I personally have been very happy with our customer

service from the company as well. Hope this helps!

Subject: [ ] DynaVox V vs. Vantage Lite

Hey All,

Good Evening. I hope you all are having a great weekend. My son's AAC

specialist is recommending a device to help him continue to grow his

vocabulary and social interactions as his speech continues to develop.

is 4 with spastic CP, verbal Apraxia, and dysarthria. For the last

year he has been using a pecs-based communication book with some success

(won't touch it at home but seems to use it a lot at school). is

currently at an SDC preschool and will probably be in an SDC kindergarten

next year.

The specialist (an SLP for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital) recommended

either going with the DynaVox V or the Vantage Lite. Does anyone on the

list have any experience with either? Any positive or negative reviews

would be greatly appreciated. This is our first endeavor in to AAC so we

are a bit clueless. Also if there other options we should be looking at,

please let me know.

I am heading to Europe for the next week and will be researching on the Net

while I am out there, so if you do not mind sending me suggestions to my

work email which is copied here (aman.bawaoracle (DOT) com

<blocked::mailto:aman.bawaoracle (DOT) com> ), I would greatly appreciate it.

Kind Regards,

Aman

Thanks for the response. The idea of just sitting down and exploring

the device sounds like a wonderful opportunity. loves my laptop

and the play ones we have gotten him over the years. The most home use

we have gotten out of the communication book has been when we

structure a learning game around it.

You know if you are thinking about a Dynavox they offer a free cd you can

download to the computer that is basically the program - or most of it anyway.

Of course it is not a touch screen but they can play around with the mouse. I

think it is good for 30 or 90 days. There are also programs for rental or trial

use to make sure the device you have in mind is one that is a good fit for your

child. Just throwing that out there.

We've had the Dynavox V for about 3yrs also. It had just come out when we got

it. Its been great..a little bulky for bringing back/forth to school but

otherwise its an amazing little machine. The V comes with Windows- so its also a

little computer which can do anything a home computer can do. Load pictures,

movies, favorite music to show everyone in school.

They have great customer service.

Now that my daughter is almost 8- for the next one I'd look at a more compact

one that she'd get more use out of--sorry I dont know about the other brand you

mentioned.
