The Autism Society of Kent County is sponsoring a 3-day workshop featuring Ms. Soma Mukhopadhyay, originator of Soma® RPM (Rapid Prompting Method) and Director of Education for HALO (Helping Autism through Learning and Outreach) in Austin, Texas. Soma will present her groundbreaking approach to educating and enabling communication in persons with autism and other severe communication disorders on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dominican Center at wood, 2025 E. Fulton Street in Grand Rapids, MI. From May 6 through May 8, Soma will also conduct individual instructional sessions with area students and adults with ASD. Each session will provide a live video feed, allowing parents, other family members and professionals the opportunity to observe, ask questions, and learn more about Soma® RPM. Soma Mukhopadyhay, like so many mothers, could not accept the conventional wisdom when her son Tito was diagnosed with severe autism. Defying the prognosis that Tito was incapable of accomplishing anything, Soma devised a way to teach her son to read, write and do math.. Tito is now a published author, and Soma has dedicated her life to teaching her revolutionary Rapid Prompting Method to hundreds of autistic children and adults throughout the world. Soma's work proves what many parents have suspected: that students with autism are capable of learning at academic levels previously thought unattainable. The power of an academic education improves the lives of all people, and the Rapid Prompting Method is the key to providing the gift of education and communication to students with autism. Soma's work has garnered national attention; she was featured on CNN International in 2008, and has also been profiled on 60 Minutes II, PBS and the BBC. Articles about Soma have also appeared in the New York Times, National Geographic and Scientific American. Soma's vision for HALO and her Rapid Prompting Method is to increase academic learning and communication, and to promote understanding and respect for persons diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder around the globe.
