Guest guest
I was told that 1/2 tsp was around 2 capsules. Thing is none of us is going to be exact when it comes to liquid to capsules! Oils are going to be more cost efficient -but they have a downside in that they are liquid -fish oil liquid that is -outside the capsule that keeps them fresh for up to 3 years. The bottle once opened only stays fresh for a few months and needs to be refrigerated/harder to travel with. My son Tanner noticed the taste difference and refused to take his oils by the 3rd day of trying to use the oil in the bottle even though I never told him it was any different. After paying 100 bucks a half hour for therapy -I didn't care about the small difference in cost to as much as no way can I have Tanner refusing to take his fish oil. Besides I started to wonder...if the oil is only fresh for a few months -is the oil as low in peroxide a week after it's opened? A month? The capsules on the other hand...each capsule is super fresh and stable. Below is a quick post from http://www.apraxia.org Hope it helps! Here's a clip of an archive from the CHERAB group that may help answer some basic questions about fish oils: What fish oil should I give to my baby or child? The confusion is more the brand names than the formulas. In actuality there really is no such thing as a " children's EFA " perfect for all children yet. However fish oils can be marketed to children by making fun flavorings and smaller capsules. Most of the parents I know squeeze the oil out of the capsule anyway -so that's besides the point for most of our group. EFAs are in baby formula and food, and EFAs come and are used in a variety of formulas for children for various reasons. Mainly we hear about the use of them for healthy brain development in regards to children but Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids are essential to the body, yet our bodies can't produce them so we need to consume them, and yet they are virtually lacking in our diets today. There are tips posted to this discussion board on how to get fish oils into children. Dosage that was used for ten years now in the CHERAB group " I will use the following examples with the brand name ProEFA since that's the formula/dosage that seems to work the best for most of us (Efalex and EyeQ are similar Omega 3/6 formulas that also have good reports) For any brand name of Omega 3/6 formula -you could make the same formula by mixing together fish oil and either primrose or borage seed oil. Keep in mind in anecdotal feedback done by parents from all over through CHERAB -that pure Omega 3 (including cod liver oil) or pure Omega 6 either showed no results -or very little results in almost all cases. If wanting to use a pure Omega 3 the best reports were from higher EPA formulas like Coromega -but again with the small amount of GLA better results were reported. When it comes to fish oils brand name isn't important, all that matters are formula, dosage and quality of the oils. Dosage of one capsule a day ProEFA that at the lowest dosage appears to be the best - 148 mg EPA 99 mg DHA 40 mg GLA Nordic Naturals makes a number of oils...the Omega 369 is the commercial line sold in stores of the same professional line not sold in stores called ProEFA. ProEFA is slighly cheaper as you get 90 capsules per bottle vs. 60 and in most cases on line for around the same price. For the person that says they are using Nordic Naturals " fish oil " that may or may not be the right formula. You want the ratio of at least what's in the ProEFA to start -but many of us in the CHERAB group found raising the EPA a bit more brought even better results. We should have a new website soon (thanks to !) but for now here's some more info online http://www.cherab.org/information/indexinformation.html#diet Article from EngleMed " Look Who's Talking Now: Fish oil capsules help children with speech disorders find their voices " http://www.cherab.org/information/dietaryeffects/Englemed.html There is also an entire chapter about fish oils in The Late Talker book. If anyone has any questions please ask. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=115029735601#/topic.php?uid=115029735601 & t\ opic=7401 =====
Guest guest
Help! I had my son on NN CLO AND 1 tsp of Complete Omega 3.6.9. After reading the info on here, I've decided to go the route of removing the CLO and adding the ProEPA. Here's the thing...do I keep him on 1 tsp of Omega 3.6.9 and add 1 capsule of ProEPA? Should I increase the ProEPA or lower the 3.6.9? I'm trying to get the right ratio. For what it's worth, I do have the capsules of ProEFA. So, I could eliminate the liquid 3.6.9 altogether but I would need to know how many capsules to equal what I've been giving him in liquid...unless it's better to go down in dosage. Confused yet? Thanks! Joanna http://drewautismdiary.blogspot.com > > I was told that 1/2 tsp was around 2 capsules. Thing is none of us is > going to be exact when it comes to liquid to capsules! Guest guest
Hi Joanna, 1/2 tsp of ProEFA (or Omega 369) is about the same as 2 capsules of ProEFA. In order to do the same ratio that has worked best for most of us you'd add one capsule of ProEPA to each 1/2 tsp of ProEFA. This means you can cut the dosage of ProEFA down to 1/2 tsp and give the one capsule of ProEPA with that -or still give the 1 tsp of ProEFA and give the one capsule of ProEPA. If you were to increase again you'd add the ProEPA. Not sure if you who brought it up but as far as lipid testing to increase -scientifically speaking all would love if this method really worked to tell us what is needed. And we all do try it -or many of us do at some point. Some of us lowered or raised oils due to the testing. Unfortunately as you'll read in the archives it doesn't work and outside of the formula we found to work -the lipid testing doesn't tell you the " right " formula. There's the whole blood brain barrier for just one possible reason why. Thankfully we have at this point thousands of testimonies over a decade- that's got to mean something...scientifically speaking I mean. http://cherab.org/news/scientific.html =====
Guest guest
Thanks for the reply ! I think that I might just go ahead and switch to the ProEFA capsules and lower the dose to the original recommended ratio (2 ProEFA: 1 ProEPA). I KNOW he has the sounds in him. He just can't keep them up (they come and go although it's been 3 months since I've heard most of them). It wasn't me who brought up the lipid testing, but interesting nonetheless. Thanks Joanna http://drewsautismdiary.blogspot.com > > Hi Joanna, > > 1/2 tsp of ProEFA (or Omega 369) is about the same as 2 capsules of ProEFA.
