Guest guest
Today at my local university my youngest had his first AAC session. My oldest son and daughter (12 and 11) sat in the video room with other graduate students and listened and watched us in the clinic room (my youngest son and daughter, the graduate student, the supervising SLP, and me). Today's session was observing my youngest 5 yrs 8 mos, taking the parental intake, and having my son repeat words and determine what sounds he can make. After 90 minutes my son decided he'd had enough! I brought pudding cups and we all had one! Next session we try out the devices. I could see the loaners on one side of the room and it was like being in an AAC device catalog. Prior to the clinic I sat next to an elderly man who had a Dynavox. He told us he had a stroke, graduated from Kansas Univ, and his favorite song is Gene Autrey's " Home On the Range. " . I was glad to meet him and I appreciated the grace he had about his device. My son wondered why his " yes " and " no " didn't have a smiley face and a frowney face like his Boardmaker symbols! LOL! I hope we find a device that helps him express himself further. He's doing really well in ST but after 3yrs 2 mos of ST it's still hard to understand him. I think this will help him too. The graduate students had some pretty inaccurate ideas about insurance coverage bless them! Don't worry! I set them straight but kept it brief! LOL!
