Guest guest
> please share what ways worked the best with your child and what and why do > some push the computer so much thanks nikki Prompt is what helped my son talk. The computer has been a great learning tool for my son, but not for his speech. Earobics has helped him with phonological awareness, starfall and other sites have been fun and have helped him with reading. I taught him to learn and be able to spell our last name by using it as a password on the computer. I posted it on a post-it and he typed it in enough times that it stuck. Guest guest
Hi, I have to add something to this please. Do not think that your school in PA is the worst one out there and the only one out there living and teaching in the past. In my state of NH we have a very bad special education system here. Not the entire state but most of the school districts in the northern part have the worst schools the county of Coos especially is living in the clouds. In my city of Berlin if you mentioned the words Kaufamn to them they would look at you witha blank stare. They do not do Kaufman cards, they do not use sign language unless the child is hearing impaired, do not believe in the PECs program much and I have not had them even suggest usinga computer with my son for use in speech therapy. The head of the ST program in my district is an idiot really. ( If there is someone else from my city on this board please come forward and speak up). I just thought i would add that your school is not the only one without a clue to what they are doing or offering for services to our children. Why i ask this is we used for years a computer did nothing for my son in fact it really was not a help he never talked words by using it. Then we used signs and he been saying words he signs here is my problem i have two speech teachers we live in PA the worst place on earth for eduction they live in the past lol in my area they so far behind on things that work is sad. My private speech teacher is wonderful she gone to a workshop by nancy kaufman she uses the kaufman cards and they working wonders for my son she uses the say and sign stuff and she uses tactile ideas she uses alot of multi sensory since my son is apraxia and a sensory and auditory process child. my school speech uses some sotra of card program and she always trying to push the computer on my son saying oh no the computer works best not signs and that other stuff it upsets me why on earth if we seeing say and signs work and the kaufman cards why would you keep pushing the computer please share what ways worked the best with your child and what and why do some push the computer so much thanks nikki
Guest guest
It sounds like you need so much help I wouldn't know where to start. I guess for me to share at least the basic starter things to do are pretty much all in The Late Talker book (did you read that?) How old is your son now? No matter what age I'd read the book if I were you because there for sure will be things you can pull from it. It's never too late to get on the right track and no time like today. Congratulations for finding us! Robin's daughter grew up in PA so I know how bad it can be- and I don't know if I can share that she won the law suit against them -so pretend I didn't just say that. http://www.cherab.org/news/.html But yes that bad. Shame on them for what they did to an innocent child. Robin didn't find our group until was 17. Guest guest
We you say computer do you mean a communication device? We use all forms of communication not just one. I let Trisha lead us in which mode she prefers to communicate but you have to remember we still need to teach her other modes as well so when she says or signs something then we will ask her to find it on her device just to make sure she can. I'm not so sure if it's " pushing " or " encouraging " there's a fine line between the two. Have you asked that both therapists talk with each other so one knows what the other is doing? The more ways someone has to communicate the better. Think about it we all use different ways to communicate each day without even thinking about it. Our kids should have that same opportunity. Some people " push " speech over sign, some push sign over communication devices some push speech over communication and so on. Why push anyone form, why not embrace them all? BTW, I'm not saying you are pushing one over the other just making a statement of what I have seen over the years. I love total communication because it gives Trisha access to communication when her other modes are not appropriate or available. Guest guest
I noticed my son having a speech delay at 18 months and had to push to get him help. I researched and got him into early intervention, a speech therapist came to my home twice a month. I then researched more and found out from Amazon.com there was a DVD called baby babble 1 and later came baby babble 2, he at age 3.5 is still mesmerized by these DVDs and will imitate the whole DVD...Which is great for apraxia (as I now learned) He has been in group speech twice a week though the state, and I have him enrolled in private pre-k 2 days a week. He is doing great, he has went from just a few words to whole complete sentences in this past year.. but the words are not correct which is what made me continue to find out what was wrong.. I had him re-evaluated and he has finally been diagnosed with moderate to severe apraxia of speech. He is doing so well and loves to repeat that he is more on the moderate than the severe end... thanks to the early intervention...he still has a long way to go but I now have him seeing a private speech therapist (pathologist) once a week one on one, she also used to be a opera singer and she currently teaching music vocal and piano, she really loves the speech end of it which is why she got her masters in speech pathology, anyway we go this week for our second session and I look forward to it, she is great so far.. Next year when my son is 4, (he will go to kindergarten at age 6 due to his birthday, so two more years of pre-k, which is a good thing I think) my son will go to pre-k for 5 days (8-12pm) then to speech three days a week one on one.. two of the days will be through the state school system, the other day will be private.. To answer your question, interact with other kids his age, DVD's like baby babble, and other phonic DVDs. Early intervention, asap.. and speech as much as you can. Also a sibling that talks clearly has also helped, my older son helps to teach, but this can also be a friend the same age. I have noticed they really get interested in listening to other children their age.. PS: BTW: what program on your computer are you using, I have heard a few websites like starfall are good, but do you actually have a program? let me know thanks.. > > Ways helpd your child to talk.
