Guest guest
We just got our son (who was 5 at the time)to start shaking his heaad last year. We literally put our hands on either side of his head and would gently help him turn his head side to side while we said NO. We would do this of course as an answer to a question we knew he would want to say NO for. Once he learned this (very quickly...in less than a week), we stuck with just NO shaking for about two weeks to make sure he was doing it on his own. Then, we did the same technique for yes. We'd hold out things we knew he wanted (i.e. a snack, toy, movie) and say " Do you want a snack? " and the therapist would help him shake his head YES. We'd all say YES, VERY GOOD! Then of course, give the snack. He caught on quickly. Wish I did this years ago! It's been very helpful, although at times he'll give me the wrong head shake. Still sooooo much better than not at all. > > My two boys have severe global dyspraxia. To the point that it has made it very hard to teach sign and they are non verbal. When they want something and the answer is yes to my question, they will sign " more " . How do I teach them to nod their head when they want something and to shake their head " no " when they don't? > > One boy has finally learned how to point. Yay!!! And he will point to let us know something but I would really love to move on from the one sign " more " to learning to nod and shake head " no " . > > Dana > and Garrett, just turned 4, SCD 2 years > Celiac, ASD, Speech and Motor Apraxia, sensory processing disorder > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Have you looked into aug comm devices yet? If he can point, then the one who can do this should be able to use an aug comm device. An slp woud evaluate him for the most appropriate device. Here is a link for one manufacturer..they have the vanguard and the spring board. http://store.prentrom.com/cgi-bin/store/SB2-AEN.html sl The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential, proprietary, and/or privileged material. Guest guest
My boys are very sensory seeking and when teachers try to use this in school, they noticed that the boys would just push the buttons to hear the " sound " which were things like " I want to eat " and " I want to drink " They suggested not using it because it was too distracting and work more on learning to sign. Guest guest
Thank you! This is what I need to do then. Good idea to have someone help them nod their head while some else is asking the question. I know my boys can learn it because they eagerly sign " more' when they want something and when they really, really want something, they pound their fists together in the more sign. It is cute. But I really wanted to move on to teach the yes and no. So, we will work on " yes " first. Thanks so much, again! Guest guest
It may physically hurt to nod. The only nodding we had was on E.
