Guest guest
Nadine- simply put--a good friend of mine was told to get the Flu vaccine during her pregnancy with twins. She now has a son with autism-- and it was definitely linked to the mercury in the vaccine. I wish she was here to express how dreadful that vaccine was for her and the life of her son-- she would be able to convince you where I don't have the words to even come close. I *WILL* tell you, however, what my own OB/GYN told me with the flu vaccine last winter--- he's *SUPPOSED* to tell all of his patients to get it (one of those recommendations you know) and I questioned him, because I happen to know that the flu vaccine is CONTRAINDICATED FOR ALL PREGNANT WOMEN, and I asked why he would tell me to stay away from a certain amount of ocean fish, but then suggest I get the vaccine that has mercury. All I can say is that he had an interesting response-- and he is NOT in favor of the flu vaccine, and yes, it indeed should not be given to women, but he has to " do his job " and give that as a recommendation- but he follows through with his own personal advice if the woman asks I'd stay away from it at all costs-- and I DID stay away from it bek In a message dated 10/6/2008 9:36:16 P.M. Guest guest
Hi Nadine! Congratulations!!! A gift for the holidays!!! I don't think this is the type of question you'll get one answer to. It's tragic that children each year do die from something we don't consider so serious -the flu " Influenza-Associated Deaths among Children in the United States, 2003–2004 " by was " published " in the New England Journal of Medicine -a " PubMed Citation " . http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/abstract/353/24/2559 There is much in the archives on this as far as types of vaccine flu- shot/flu-mist. If you don't know how to archive let me know. Our family has not had a flu shot yet (ever) and after reading last year about the threat of the bird flu pandemic I thought maybe this year we'd go for one -perhaps next year. Just read up on all the pros and cons and sleep on it. You'll know what is right to do. Here's some to start: New York Times, United States - 30 minutes ago October 7, 2008 Vital Signs Treatment: Flu Vaccine for Pregnant Women Is 2 for 1 By NICHOLAS BAKALAR For the first time, a clinical trial has shown that pregnant women who receive the influenza vaccine provide immunity to their newborns as well. The vaccine is not licensed for infants younger than 6 months, but is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for all pregnant women. The study, published online Sept. 17 in The New England Journal of Medicine, divided 340 pregnant women in Bangladesh into two groups. The first received the flu vaccine; the second, a control group, received a vaccine for pneumococcal disease. Then the researchers interviewed the mothers once a week for 24 weeks to track the health of their infants. Babies whose mothers took the flu vaccine had a 63 percent reduction in influenza compared with the controls, and a 29 percent reduction in rates of respiratory illness with fever. According to the C.D.C., only 13 percent of pregnant women reported being vaccinated in the 2006-7 flu season. “I think that when it’s clear that immunizing the mother also has an effect on the baby’s health, there may be more interest in immunizing mothers,” said Dr. Mark C. Steinhoff, the senior author and a professor of pediatrics at s Hopkins. “This is a real two for one. You immunize the mother, you protect two people.” The small study was supported in part by money from two pharmaceutical companies. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/07/health/research/07baby.html?_r=1 & ref=science & p\ agewanted=print & oref=slogin Here's another one New Survey Shows Pregnant Women Unaware, Misinformed about Flu Shot Benefits During Pregnancy http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/new-survey-shows-pregnant-women,568330.s\ html But that's for pregnancy -here's one for kids Flu Shots: Not So Helpful for Kids? Guest guest
Tell her to show you what studies she is referring to. Last year's flu shot was found to be ineffective. Actually, many people who got the flu shot got sick. Most flu shots have mercury in them. http://www.nvic.org/Diseases/Influenza.htm Most flu shots contain mercury, especially adult ones. Quite frankly, for an OB to recommend this to a pregnant woman is in my opinion reckless. Mercury is know to cause neurological problems. It is the second most toxic substance on earth. They tell you to watch your intake of tuna but want to inject mercury into your blood stream when pregnant????? Guest guest
No thimerosol simply means less than two % of total weight. Less than 2% of contents need not be declared per FDA. Then there are the aluminum concerns. Took that out of pet vaccines 10 years ago. Guest guest
I highly agree! Do NOT get the flu shot, especially while pregnant. I feel strongly that it was my prenatal flu shot and antibiotics that sent my genetically predisposed dtr. into apraxia. I heard on NPR that researchers are finding that there is an association between multiple flu shots and increasing prostate cancer and Alzheimers. Guest guest
Nadine, As a nurse I am to advocate for flu vaccinations; especially to the young, elderly or otherwise susceptible. But as a mom, I don't vaccinate.. The flu vaccination will only protect you from the particular strain it supports, and still can allow you to become infected with the virus. If the strain is particularly virulent or easily spread, the flu vaccination may only lessen the severity of symptoms. If you don't vaccinate and you or your children do become infected, Tami-flu can be prescribed to lessen the severity and length of influenza. I do this and feel much safer not subjecting my children to an injection they may not need. Guest guest
I JUST saw on the news last night that the flu shot that the CDC is selling to the world isn't even really effective at protecting from the flu. THEN, this morning on the TODAY SHOW (whatever Meredith Viera is on...) a woman said that it protects very well (joke). IN my VERY humble opinion, I say do NOT get a flu shot that is known to contain thimersol (mercury) while you are pregnant. Why subject your baby to mercury in the womb? That's just nuts to me. I also have a friend, a grown woman, who became very inexplicably sick, heart palpitations, numb hands, headaches for many months after getting a flu shot. She went to doctor after doctor for them finally to determine it was a reaction to the mercury in the vaccine. She thought she was dying!!! Not kidding. > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > Came from OB/GYN appt today, am expecting our fourth baby on > > December > > > 5. Guest guest
Nadine, If you are breastfeeding exclusively--which I STRONGLY recommend ---your newborn infant will be protected by the immune response your body will produce to most viruses around. You can still get the flu of course and be really sick, but with proper nutrition, immune boosters high C and D and Zinc and a few other natural supplements known to be OK with lactation, your baby will be protected and what ever he/she will get will be very mild,. this happened to us when she was 5 months and while she did have a runny no severe and some fever, she was fine in just a few days and no real bad symptoms to speak of. but breastfeeding and NO FORMULA are critical for this wonderful built in immunity nature devised for babies to work properly. There are many other natural things you can do to protect against the flu, like hydrogen peroxide gargling, sea salt gargling, Netti pot, chamomile infusions, and hydrogen peroxide in the ears, 5 drops in each alternatively and this at the very first sign of a cold--it will help decimate the bacteria and viruses growing there and making a cold/flu so bad. Just think natural and avoid sugars, refined carbs and dairy as these too will strengthen the immune response. Stay healthy and have an easy third term and birth. Eat lots of protein and leafy greens every day! -Elena From: nadineck <nadineck@...> Subject: [ ] OB/GYN suggests Flu Shot for Whole Family Date: Monday, October 6, 2008, 9:33 PM Hi, Came from OB/GYN appt today, am expecting our fourth baby on December 5. Guest guest
Hi: I believe posted a website that showed which vaccines contain mercury and which ones " do not " ( a certain amt is still allowed for the vaccine to be listed as " no mercury " ) This is it : www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/vaxsupply.htm#table. It looks like the some of the single dose vials dont " contain mercury " . I used to work in a pediatrician's office and now work in an OB office and both offer flu vaccine. I gave many vaccines and gave my children vaccines under the assumption that the MD new best and wouldnt steer me in the wrong direction. I dont think the same way now. I believe that the flu shot is engineered based on what strain seems to be the most dominant and or virulent that particular year. It definitely does not cover all the different strains out there and I dont feel comfortable giving flu shots to pregnant women knowing that there is limited research on the safety to the fetus when a pregnant woman receives it. I also decided not to give it to my children. That's only my opinion. Good luck... Guest guest
Yvette- No, most likely they aren't lying to you-- or at least not intentionally. I believe that most of them will just use the wording that the FDA uses which is " Mercury-free " even though there are trace amounts that are still there. I don't think most health care professionals are AWARE of this Becky In a message dated 10/7/2008 6:18:29 P.M. Guest guest
Breast feeding is a natural vaccination process and nothing can replace that, it is priceless!!! I am glad you have decided to go the natural way!!! Just remember.. viruses and bacteria are not the problem it is a non functioning immune system!!! That is why many HIV patients never develop AIDS, only the ones that have a faulty immune system are at risk for any type of infection.... God bless your socks off!!!
