Guest guest
Hello to everyone. I haven't posted in a long time but I'm still around. I am up against a problem right now and I wanted your opinion. My daughter is 9 and will complete 3rd grade this month, however she is required by the state to take a summer course for " Reading Proficiency " . I don't mind her taking the course, but I think the state is demanding it without the knowledge that Shyann has apraxia and can't be expected to read with the fluency expected of her. Although I plan to have her take the course (it will help) I want to challenge the state on this " requirement " . One, do you think it is discriminatory? and Two, should I challenge the state even though I plan to have her complete the course?. This is the first I've been up against something like this. Hugs to all, Joy and Shyann 9, verbal apraxia _,_._,___
Guest guest
Are they measuring her reading proficiency based on her oral reading fluency? You can be a fluent reader without being able to read out loud! My son for instance is reading a few grade levels above his grade (1st) but he does miserably on reading comp tests with open ended questions due to a language disorder (in addition to apraxia.) He answers multiple choice questions just fine so we KNOW he comprehends what he reads. Does you daughter have overall reading issues or is it just not being able to say the words she is reading? I don't think I'd say it's discrimination based on what you have shared here. If she is having reading difficulties I'd be happy they are giving her options for improvement. However, if the schools haven't done an adequate job of trying alternate testing methods to determine where the problem arises from I'd be upset. Have you spoken with her teacher(s) about this?
