Guest guest
Okay I am thoroughly confused in what to do right now. My son, Larsyn, is 2.5 yo and has been diagnosed with apraxia, hypotonia and sensory integration dysfunction. He has NO true words, just babbles mostly. He was in group speech (1 SLP and 1 assistant to 6 boys)- 2hrs a day/3x wk and 2 hours of OT a week. He was not making progress, so he was changed to 1:1 (with an awesome SLP who specializes in apraxia!) for 1 hour session/2x week. Plus continue with his OT. I know group speech isn't right for apraxia, but it really helped him with attention, staying on task, following directions, socializing with his peers, etc. Unfortunately our EI didn't approve both group and individual speech, so I just signed him up to a typical preschool for 3hrs/2 days week. He starts that next week. Well, my EI case worker just e-mailed me and said the SLP really thinks he needs MORE therapy to work on his attention span, etc. Unfortunately EI won't approve any type of group setting, but they did say he could have ABA therapy to work on some of his behaviors (he doesn't do anything disruptive, he is very social, plays well with others, plays appropriately). He was tested for autism, but the developmental ped. said he did not fall on the spectrum, though he had some certain " tendencies " which were similar. The case worker said he could start with 6-10 hrs/wk with a therapist that comes to my home or I could bring him to CLC www.childrenslearningconnection.com . What are some of your experiences with this type of situation or ABA. I would LOVE any input. I hate to turn down any free therapy!! :-) Should I just see how he does in Preschool (which we are paying for...and not cheap!)? Should I just fight for some more speech therapy? I finally think I have things figured out, then something always changes on me ;-) By the way, we are in the focus group for " SPEAK " !! YEA! I can not wait for Larsyn to try it! Thank you so much.
