Guest guest
Hi Jen, Are doing a Gluten/Casein free diet? There is a ton of research out there that supports this diet for children with apraxia or autism. Have you given it any thought? We just put our daughters on it - ages 2 and 3. The 3 year old has apraxia. She is babbling so much and putting the few words that she knows together. She is engaging in more conversation and talking up a storm! It is not all understandable but she sure is trying. Thanks for sharing, Jenn From: jenniferkpereira <jenniferkpereira@...> Subject: [ ] need advice--my son has lost all language at 4.5 years-old Date: Monday, May 4, 2009, 7:01 PM My son has apraxia & autism. He was verbal prior to autism diagnosis, and lost all verbal communication. We did lots of therapies & biomedical interventions, and he gradually gained back about 20 words/approximation s. However, over the past 3 months we have lost all verbal communication. He still has all the receptive skills, and appears to understand us, and he tries to imitate our words, but he is unable to do so. Any idea on what may be happening with him? Is this a regression? due to food infractions? developmental? I would greatly appreciate any input you may have. We had not made any changes in supplements or medications during the time that he quit verbal communication. Thank you, jen
Guest guest
Jen you say your child is on supplements and medications. Can you provide a list of both? What condition does he have that he needs medication for? Who is treating him? Has he been for neurodevelopmental exams with either a pediatric neurologist or developmental pediatrician? What type of preschool placement is he in and what type and amount of therapy is he receiving? Have you read The Late Talker book and if you have- have you tried just the basics? I can tell you that more is not always better and in fact more can be worse. Also while I don't believe in special diets for apraxia or autism unless your child has an allergy as for most it's unnecessary and just makes your child more different than the rest you probably will benefit from watching your child's diet to make sure it's as organic and healthy as possible. Cut down on saturated or trans fats as if your child is on fish oils they will compromise the effectiveness of the good fats. Also if you have your child (or started your child) on anything that is high fiber for some reason in my son and it's anecdotal here that you will notice regressions in speech. I discussed this years ago with Tanner's then pediatric gastroenterologist (he thank God has not needed one for years!) and he suspects it possible that the fiber is short chaining the long chain fatty acids in the gut. So within the past few weeks have you started anything new in the diet -medications? Anything new with therapy? No matter what regression of any area at any age means immediate referral to a neurologist. Let me know if this is who is treating your child and again please let me know what supplements and medications/reasons for medications, =====
Guest guest
Not to scare you but I would look into seizures. Contact a neurologist and have testing done. Michele > > My son has apraxia & autism.
