Guest guest
Thanks everyone it's interesting to hear how things vary by State, County, etc. We're in CA.EI will run thru the last day of his birthday month of November. My other child participated in 3 different SDC's in our County and the programs were great for her. Of course each different was a bit different given the mix of kids. I dont know whether or not there's a limitation to SDC if only one issue (ST) is involved. Wouldnt be surprised. For my dd, the structure and routine of the SDC was incredible, and she had an aide. It was perfect for her and she thrived. Now in her first year of public school and doing beautifully with minimal support - the systenm really worked for her! She had ST, OT needs. For my little guy, ST is truly all he needs in spite of some mild sensory things. The schools around here seem to group children by level of need and ultimately it's a mixed classroom of children with different diagnoses, with communication (expressive, receptive etc) a big part of the classroom day. I just dont feel he needs that (plus would rather send him to a private preschool my other children have attended). BUT the only other option here is group speech, twice weekly. I have been around IEP's now for nearly 7 years and KNOW it's not about what's available but his needs. I plan on doing the needed research to demonstrate that with something like apraxia (of late also thinking maybe it's a phonological issue), that 1:1 therapy is needed. He's making progress but many words have to be broken down for weeks and weeks for them just to gel a bit. And then they still dont sound like the real word but we know what it is. Some sounds (c,k,w, g and several others) forget it.. just can't get it out. I do kind of have a " get out of jail free card " (bad analogy) but true. We live in one County but the County South of us is our school district. Special ed classrooms for preschool in school district County are nearly 90 min away. Learned thru all we went thru with our dd that " our " school district has generally been very willing to bend over backwards because honoring some of my " outside the box " requests ia a whole lot cheaper than sending a bus to get my child and take to their classrooms (not that I would allow that).Anyway, just an aside. We've been kind of fortunate in that regard, esp where the preschool stuff is concerned. Hopefully I'll have same success with him as I did for her. I basically want to ask for 2 hours a week 1:1 either with his current therapist (continuity of care) or if we have to, with another therapist. I will then provide feedback to private preschool on things we're working on. Our district would have to contract with our County's special ed preschool ST anyway, so I'm hoping they'll be agreeable in contracting with who we're currently seeing. Sorry, this is probably confusing. It makes me angry it should have to be so hard. Thanks for sharing your stories Leigh > > > > Hi Everyone > > well I'd forgotten how quickly the IFSP transitional meeting comes up (6 months prior to the 3rd bday - at least here). While I understand the need for everyone to get things in place so there's an appropriate place/services for the child at age 3, so much can change. My son is not quite 30 months and has been participating in ST since shortly after his 2nd bday. At this point, it's hard to tell where he might be in another 5 months as he's making progress (slow, but sure). >
