Guest guest
I too have a daughter that would have benefited with a webcam in her private school classroom. I have homeschooled her for the past 4 years after 6 weeks of improper placement and treatment that still haunts her and us as her parents... Parents should be able to view their child at any time while they are present in a public school special education room. Many of these children, such as the one in the article above, do not have a voice- they are unable to speak and tell their parents or anyone else that they are being horribly abused! Something similar happened to my apraxic son, but what they did not know was how much sign language he " really " did know. Fortunately, I removed my child from that school system and now we homeschool and so he won't be in that situation ever again. Please fight to change the law and give every special needs child a voice or a picture by placing WEBCAM's in every special needs classroom around the country. Don't let this happen to your child!! Make these phone calls and letters a priority.
Guest guest
I'm so sorry. It is tragic that these people that are allowed - by the STATE - to care for and educate our special children when they have less education than is required for a licenced child care provider! I really believe in my heart that the root of this frequently revisited problem lies in lack of education, lack of knowing what is going on in our kids' bodies that causes them to do what they do. As a parent, I can understand their frustration. I used to get so frustrated because my son would scream all the time and wouldn't respond to any typical disciplinary techniques. After I removed allergens from his diet, he nearly recovered from everything except speech. There is just absolutely no excuse for this behavior though. There are supposed to be several people working with our children and you can't tell me they don't know when a child is abused. That lady on the video made me sick with her blatant lie about not knowing who said what on the tape - BS! SOME people just shouldn't work with children PERIOD! I homeschooled my older son too for 2nd and 3rd grade. Neither of my children have gone through elementary school without encountering an idiot teacher or staff member. I joke with my husband that at least every six months, I have to deal with some drama. God bless us all, at least we have each other! Guest guest
Here is another recent case for Cherokee County, Woodstock, Georgia. The link also mentions that this is going on nationwide. (A couple of years ago, it was Gwinnett County, GA)It has to be stopped! Some of the other groups have mentioned that the schools are pulling " the confidentiality clause " because some special ed students are mainstreamed. While others are saying that the cameras are on the buses, then why can't they be in " every " classroom, regular and special ed. Here is the other link: (in this scenario, the child was duct-taped to a desk. Several cases have come up lately and one included a special needs child being CAGED underneath the desk. http://www.examiner.com/x-7230-Atlanta-Special-Needs-Kids-Examiner~y2009m5d19-CN\ N-reports-of-abuse-of-special-needs-students-abused-in-school Please forward this to everyone you know and let's see if we cannot stop this abuse of our kids. Many in my other groups have mentioned that parents whose children are not being abused do not get involved because it is not their child being abused. One day, it could be your child or the child of someone you know. This happened to my child-he was choked for having a toilet accident by a parapro. I saw what I now now to be warning signs when he refused to even look her in the eye in public when we saw her at a store. My child hugs EVERYONE, even strangers, but he refused to even look up at her. I ignored the signs and I watched my child go down hill fast. The staff was not knowledgable about sign language (despite my efforts to get someone there for him in his language in his IEP). The daily communication folder had a note from the sp. ed teacher that read, " He must have a sore throat because he has been trying to tell me this all day. " The sign he was giving her was the sign for " choking " and he was trying to tell her of the misconduct (apparently all day), but she was sign illiterate and did not understand. For me, I was able to remove my child, build my self-confidence, and homeschool him (or at least I am attempting to do so), but some parents MUST work and do not have an option due to high cost of living, etc... Many in my other groups made mention of never putting their special needs child in a public school, but we all know that these are not today's realities for most parents. Others mentioned " open door policies with two way mirrors " , but yet the " confidentiality " applied. I know from personal experience that most school do not have an open door policy unless you first notify them you are coming. To overcome the " confidentiality " issue with the webcam's,the law could also incorporate making it a criminal offense to disclose any information about other children in the classroom, with the exception of reporting abuse. All parents should advocate for this.
