Developing a safer, kinder social world for youth with social deficits

Focus of Presentation:

· Overview of Asperger's, Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder & the

social deficits involved

· Review of teasing and bullying

· Why and how children with Asperger's, Autism, Pervasive Developmental

Disorder, Nonverbal Learning Disability & other disorders affecting social

communication & social interaction skills are at increased risk for becoming

victims of teasing & bullying

· The impact targeting has on children & teens on the spectrum

· Assisting affected youth who have experienced teasing & bullying

· Working with neuro-typical peers to prevent targeting of affected youth

· Strategies for increasing awareness of the spectrum & developing

sensitivity programming for all youth.

This workshop will provide the parent and educator with a solid

understanding of how children with social skills deficits are at a

significant risk for becoming victims of teasing and bullying, the far

reaching impact of such victimization and

strategies to reduce the incidence of teasing and bullying behavior.
