Guest guest
My question is with a 4 y.o. that wants to learn her alphabet sounds but cannot process more than the first 5 sounds we learned. Learning the alphabet itself was an 18 month process and before she learned the letters she knew many of the letter sounds. This happened because her brother was learning to read at the same time she was learning to talk. However at this point she can't seem to reconcile the sounds with the letter names. I didn't have to teach my oldest letter sounds which they understood at age 3 and read by age 5. I'm fine with taking however much time she needs. We do flashcards and talk about letters all the time. The funny thing is she knows quite a few sight words for reading. She seems to very easily remember words by sight. Does anyone have any suggestions for what they've been doing to help kids make the connection? Another post referenced a child not maturing at the same rate due to speech delays. I identify with this as well. How do I help her progress in social skills? Should I initiate group therapy for this? By the way, I homeschool and my children have play groups twice a week as well as library time. Luckily her friends haven't known her any different as extremely shy. However now that she's four, her friends are starting to develop friendships and often she is left out because she won't join in to play nor speak up. Thanks, Tara Ebert TN
