Guest guest
You need 3x per week individual oral motor PROMPT speech therapy. NO LESS! That has worked wonders for my boy. Guest guest
My son gets individual SLP 1x 45 minutes in school, and we try to do daily SLP at home (15 to 20 minutes) with the exercises she gives us. He is now 7 years old, in grade 1. He has a medical diagnosis of Asperger's (waiting for further testing, possible PDD NOS), Verbal Apraxia, Developmental Coordination disorder, and ADD. In summer months I pay for private SLP, 2x per week. In Kindergarten he attended a " language rich program " , where the teacher was an SLP, but he didn't receive individual therapy. This did not work for my son, and we saw very little progress compared to what we saw when I started taking him to private SLP. The SLP in school has worked a lot with children on the spectrum, but she doesn't have as much experience with apraxia. She works a lot on enriching his vocabulary and grammar. The private SLP uses PROMPT and works more on pronunciation and oral motor skills. I had to advocate (read: take Board to court) for my son to get any SLP at all in school, since they didn't provide any individual therapy (only consulting with the teachers or the language rich classes), and they didn't want to change their programs to suit the need of my son. I asked the private SLP to come to my son's IEP to share her findings in working with my son, to talk about his needs in Speech and in Language, and to suggest the frequency and duration of therapy sessions. The school listened politely and then cut this in half. So we ended up with 1x 45 minutes instead of 3x 30 minutes. Remember to talk about his needs at the IEP, not how much therapy you ask for. (e.g. he needs better articulation for being able to interact better with peers and teachers, needs more vocabulary to be able to share, needs better understanding of concepts, needs to speak in longer sentences,...). Prepare this " needs statement " before you go to the IEP meeting, referring to previous SLP (or other) reports. Besides the SLP, we have also included some other goals that relate to speaking in his IEP. eg. oral book presentation of 3 sentences, with each 6 words (instead of a written report). eg. weekly oral " show and share " , minimum 3 sentences, with each at least 6 words. Hope this helps and good luck with the upcoming IEP. Hyt. > > For those of you have children on the spectrum and have a apraxia too > how much speech therapy do you recc.
