Hi

My son did hippotherapy from the age of 2 to 3.....there are definitely

specific things that

the therapist does. Actually, I am a PT and looked into doing the

training...and there is a lot

of it in order to be licensed. We live in the Boulder CO area (just

mentioning as I noticed your email)

and there are lots of therapists...we did ours as CTRC but I know of a few

other places/therapists

who do it.

Hi

Thanks for the info, I just looked at the CTRC website and I had no idea it was

only a few miles from our house!! Crazy!! We have been on the wait for the Rocky

Mountain Theraputic Riding for a while. I would also love your other contacts

for hippo, if you want to email privately my email is thebouldermarket@...

Thank you so much for your help! Maybe we should have a play date sometime!!

My dd (not Apraxic, on the Spectrum) does " therapeutic riding " .. It's

not hippotherapy as they dont always have a dedicated therapist. They

do have an OT who helps set up programs for some of the more

challenging clients. My dd is high functioning with low tone issues on

her right side, so they've focused on that. I've done a photo montage

I'd be happy to foward anyone if they'd like to see. Depending on her

classmates each session she's been doing some limited vaulting and

performing in demonstrations to help the org raise money, recruit

volunteers as they rely on a huge volunteer base. She's been doing for

2 years and not only loves it but I do feel it's helped her a lot:

strength, coordination, being in tune with the huge animal she's

riding, etc... AND she has fun and it's something she's really good

at. Her riding partner (in the demos) has a rare brain anomoly and

only a small portion of his brain is formed correctly. He's also 6 and

still non-verbal and until recently wasnt even walking. His family

credits this program with really helping him with his walking!

Anyway, sorry, no suggestions/advice on the pony but just wanted to

share that therapeutic riding/hippotherapy is awesome. It took 6

months to get us in.. long waiting list til they moved to their new

facility. We're in N. CA...

I'm not too far away from you guys (Thornton.) My son rides at Coventry

Farms (The Right Step) in Littleton. We go to church down that way and the

therapeutic program is on Sundays and they have always been great about

scheduling us right after Mass. I have been interested to see if there is

anything closer, but I haven't looked too hard since Sundays at Right Step

work for us. The staff there is wonderful and it's been a great experience

for us! I would still like the other contacts if you can send them my way

as well.

I know nothing about riding so I wouldn't feel comfortable just putting him

on our own horse (if we had one!) My son has taken very well to riding and

his therapist said he's a complete natural. She gives him minimal

instruction and he usually has full control of the horse. The first couple

session he had a side walker and leader, but now he just has a leader and

half the time the lead is tied up and he just does it on his own.

Officially the program uses a leader and two side walkers, but that is

modified with permission of the parent and ability of the rider. Much to

his dislike they won't let him jump yet! LOL! He two-points over a pole on

the ground and trots, but no galloping or jumping yet!

We've also discovered that while the ponies are really cute my guy likes to

ride the big thoroughbreds. He is WAY up there. He gets off his horse on

his own and the bottom of the horse's belly is about at the level of his

ear! He also insists on a BOY horse! :)
