Guest guest
My 27 month old just had an MRI this month... brain w/o contrast. They also did a blood work up while he was " under. " The medical professionals let me come back with my little guy (his Dad and grandpa waited in the other room) and this is what helped: 1. I brought lots of his comfort items from home so that when he came to, he would be surrounded by familiar things (his lamb, his binky, etc) 2. I brought some books to look at (to distract him) while he was being put under general anesthesia. We also practiced putting the mask over his mouth and my mouth and his bear's mouth before they actually started so he could get used to it. While they were putting him under, I was reading to him from one of his favorite books. It didn't totally take care of his fear, but it certainly helped -- both of us! 3. The medical professionals also helped us by coming to get us before our son woke up from anesthesia. We were right there when he woke up... helped his transition. 4. ADVOCATE for your little one... I had to make sure that the right labs were ordered because I didn't want him to have to be stuck again and again... and wanted to be sure that he got the most of his " being under " experience. Hope this helps! C.
