Autism Speaks Applauds the New Jersey State Assembly On May 21, 2009, Autism Speaks joined New Jersey families, Autism New Jersey, and other autism advocacy organizations in applauding the members of the State Assembly for passing A. 2238, which requires insurance companies to provide coverage of evidence-based, medically necessary autism therapies. The bill passed the New Jersey Assembly in a vote of 70-4-1 and now heads to the State Senate Budget & Appropriations Committee for further action. Read more and see video here. Autism Speaks Releases First Strategic Plan for Autism Research Autism Speaks has released its strategic plan for autism research, which outlines its goals and priorities for research funding over the next three years. Autism Speaks, to date, has committed over $130 million in autism science. The Autism Speaks Strategic Plan, developed in consultation with its Scientific Advisory Committee and outside advisors, is focused on innovation and an emphasis on translating discoveries into diagnosis and treatments for individuals living with autism today. Read more here. Family Services Community Grants Deadline: June 25, 2009 Autism Speaks invites service providers to submit a Family Services Community Grant proposal. The focus of Autism Speaks Family Services Community Grants is on proposals that serve to build the field of services for individuals with autism and expand the capacity to effectively serve this growing community. Organizations interested in submitting an application must address one of the four areas of need: education, recreation/community activities, equipment/supportive technology, and young adult/adult services. Successful applicants will apply grant funding to support new programs or the expansion of existing projects. Past NJ recipients include the Bergenfield Public School District, Pathways for Exceptional Children in Montville, Project Win-Win Youth Developmental Clinic in Newark and the Garden State Discovery Museum's Center for Learning in Cherry Hill. Click here to download the Request for Applications. 2009 ING NYC Marathon For the third year, Autism Speaks is honored to be selected to host a team for the ING NYC Marathon on November 1. Autism Speaks is the only autism charity selected to have a team in the marathon making this the sole opportunity to run the NYC Marathon for the autism community. This year, 125 individuals will train, fundraise, and run for the cause. To date, our elite Autism Speaks runners have raised over $390,000 for Autism Speaks increasing the pace of autism research with every dollar.
